Advantages: Long Lead, Powerfull Motor, Large array of tools
Disadvantages: Potentially loud noise, Box clogs easily/quickly, Twist and lok loks too hard sometimes
I aquired a Hoover Discovery about a year ago. On first looks it was a good machine. The specs were in its favour and the colour wasn't too garish.
The features included:
1700w Motor
Turbobrush
OnBoard Tools
Cord Rewind
Hepa Filter
After I had plugged it in, I started cleaning. Now, we are not a mucky household, indeed, I collect vacuum cleaners and have used alot in my time. I cleaned the entire ground floor of the house and emptied the cleaner twice. This may be a good time to mention the bagless feature of this vaccum. It features an EcoBox, which is basically a non airtight box that keeps the dirt in and lets air pass through. When you empty the box, however, lots of dirt has been forced into the holes, meaning that either a brush or vaccum out with another cleaner is necessary to get it clean again. When you first use it empty, the power is incredible. The turbo brush, which is air activated spins round fast, and the combined suction and brush removes even the stubbornest cat hair from the horribleist of mats. But, when the box starts to fill, and the holes become blocked, the air flow is reduced, and the brush stops spinning, so you have to empty it. The turbo brush is auto adjusting, and when used on hard floors, as long as the power is right down, otherwise the suction keeps the poles standing up, no joke, the brush slowly rotates and the floor can be cleaned.
There is a standard floor tool avaliable, which I didnt get, so cannot comment on.
The small tools are the Crevice tool, which was a little short, Upholstery tool/stair tool and a dusting brush. Also included is a short pole with an elbow on the end that rotates 90 degrees. This is to enable the user to clean on top of bookcases and the like, and worked well.
The other little niggle is the connecting mechanism. Years ago, Hoover used the Pip and Twist method of connecting tools together. The system is still alive and well in this model, although refined. To connect the tool/pole, you engage the little plastic pip in the notch in the receiving end, and turn until it locks. This has the advantage of the attachment not falling off when in use, but can be stiff to use.
The unit comes with a HEPA filter, which works well, however, be advised not to use the cleaner when the filter is removed, as the motor is extremely high pitched.
Overall, an extremely powerfull cleaner, more suited to small houses/flats with more hair and big debry than fine dust.
