Hoover TCW1610 1600W Cylinder
Advantages: compact, adjustable floor head, good amount of suction, cleans well
Disadvantages: poor quality of pipes
The hoover itself is very compact coming in with a height of 27cm, width of 28cm and depth of 42.5cm. Given these dimensions you'll have probably guessed that this is a cylindrical vacuum cleaner and not an upright! I didn't really have a preference initially as to the type of vacuum cleaner that I wanted but I'm now glad that I opted for this. It's so compact making it ideal for a small flat where space is at a premium as it is so easy to store away. It's small enough to just slide under my bed and out of sight until I next need to use it, leaving me with more floor space for myself. It is also quite light, weighing just 4.9kg, making it easy to carry around and it has a carry handle that allows you to do this.
The outer body is made of a mixture of white and purple plastic - the main body is white whilst the buttons and the cylinder, where dust is collected, are purple in colour. The cylinder also has a transparent body, allowing you to see how much dust has been collected in it and comes marked with a 'maximum fill line' which lets you know when the dust should be emptied out. The cleaner also has two large wheels at the back allowing it to be pulled around easily when in use. I think the vacuum cleaner looks very stylish.
The hoover comes equipped with a plastic hose and extendable pipes, along with an adjustable floorhead, allowing this to be used both on carpets and laminate flooring. The hoover comes with a combined crevice tool/dust brush and pet hair remover turbo boost. Now I don't have any pets of my own but the hair remover was a feature I was looking for. I have medium length hair and it always amazes me how much of it accumulates on the floor! It really is a wonder how I still have a full head of hair! Both these tools clip together to form one tool and are stored away efficiently in their own little holder at the base of the cleaner.
As I mentioned earlier there are two large purple buttons on top of the vacuum cleaner which can be operated by both hand and foot. One button turns the vacuum cleaner on and off whilst the other is for automatic cord rewind - a very useful feature as I hate winding up the cord after vacuuming and usually make a messy job of it! The hoover comes with a generous 5 metre cord which is ample for me to plug into the socket in my hallway and vacuum the whole flat in one go. Although the cord is rewound automatically it has to be pulled out manually. Rather handily the wire comes marked with two coloured stickers which indicate how much wire is left to pull. One of these is yellow, indicating that you have only a little left and the other is red, indicating that you have almost reached the end and should stop pulling or risk yanking the wire out of the casing.
The vacuum cleaner comes with a 1.5 metre hose pipe plus some extendable pipes. I must admit that I am quite disappointed with the quality of these. They are extremely light and flimsy and I feel like I have a toy vacuum cleaner in my hand rather than a quality product. Every time I use the cleaner I am weary of breaking these. In fact my worst fear was realised once I'd been using the vacuum cleaner for around 6 months. My brother had come to stay and was not looking where he was going whilst I was vacuuming. He accidently stepped on the hose pipe and cracked it. Luckily I was able to source a replacement that wasn't too expensive but it was quite difficult to get hold of the part. None of the high street retailers seemed to stock this and I only found one online stockist! It's a shame really that Hoover have compromised on the quality of the pipes as this is in stark contrast to the body which is sturdy and well built.
When it actually comes to cleaning I have to say this vacuum cleaner really does a good job. It has a 1600 watt motor which is very powerful and generates a good suction. It picks up hair and dust with ease as well as random socks that may have fallen under my bed! However all this power does come at a price and this vacuum cleaner is really rather noisy! My flat has largely laminate floors although I do have a couple of rugs and the adjustable floorhead is brilliant, allowing me to swap between heads depending on what surface I am cleaning. The crevice tool is also very handy - great for getting into nooks and crannies where the large floorhead cannot reach.
The cleaner is a bagless one and has a cylindrical dust bin in which dust and dirt accumulate. This is great as it means there are no bags to worry about replacing, keeping running costs down. The dust capacity of this cylinder is 2 litres, which is quite a lot and I only need to empty this every month or so. The dust cylinder is easy to remove and is released by pressing a button on top of the vacuum cleaner. There is a second leaver on the handle of the cylinder to release the base of the cylinder into the bin or carrier bag into which the dust will be disposed of. The cylinder also contains a HEPA dust filter which is great for people like me who have dust allergies as the air it emits during use is cleaner (and doesn't smell at all like when I have used other vacuum cleaners). The dust filter is also washable.
Overall I am quite pleased with my vacuum cleaner and for the price I paid it does a very good job. I have been using this a few times a week for just over a year now and it is still going strong. I think the cleaner looks good and its compact size means that it is ideal for small flats like mine. I have no complaints about its cleaning abilities and my only niggle is the poor quality of the pipes supplied, for which I have knocked off a star. I would still have no real hesitations in recommending this vacuum cleaner.
Summary: A good budget vacuum cleaner
