Advantages: Good suction

Disadvantages: horrendous cost

Don't be conned into buying a Kirby vac, I am not saying they are bad machines but the money they cost is absolutely rediculous.

I was offered a "free carpet shampoo", at the time we had lived in our house 1 year & inherited a cream carpet, with 3 small children cream on the floor is not a good idea.
So I arranged the appointment, the salesman turned up on time & very smartly dressed, he was a personable young man.

The sales technique is to shock you about how dirty your home is! The bag is removed from the machine & a cloth filter put over the output, the salesman then asks you to vac your carpet with your machine until you are happy it is clean, then he gets to work on the same spot, guess what the Kirby removes more "dirt" which is then shown to you so you feel your own cleaner cannot be anygood, in reality all it is doing is picking up carpet fibres! Then he gets to work on your bed showing you the "dirt" explaining your face lies on that & only a Kirby can get it really "clean".
This is the point your carpet gets its shampoo, great you think. But does he shampoo the whole of your carpert,oh no just a small patch, can you imagine the degredation you feel when this nice young man & his shiney machine have shown you up to be a complete slob!

Then comes the sales patter, you just have to have that machine because your home must be crawling, the money aspect is put off till the last moment, you will never need to buy another machine ever is the justification for the cost & your carpet has a patch of a different colour. No labour costs on repairs for life is the claim, right enough, but the machine has parts that wear at the same rate as any other vac & replacement parts cost a fortune so the labour has been included in reality! Plus they want you to have it serviced once a year last quote on that was £65 + parts " no labour though".

I could have had a new vac of any ma
ke every 3 years for the cost of the parts in that space of time!

The machine is very good but far to heavy to do the stairs & the tools don't give the same suction, it shampoos well but the result is only as good as the shampoo used & vanish is brilliant & is a fraction of the cost of the Kirby shampoo, the bags cost approx £4 each & only last a few weeks, reusable bags are not available.

Finaly the cost, mine cost £1.200 some years ago. I was conned on reflection you can have 6 dysons for the cost of a Kirby, just as good a clean & no bags to buy!

Mate, they recommend the service. It's not required. Furthermore you can buy Kirbys for under 500 quid on Ebay. It will work out far dearer to buy, say a new Dyson, every four years. The Kirby is a better machine and comes with a lifetime warranty should something go.

This dooyoo page seems to be good therapy for the peoplewho have been conned. This "shampoo your carpet" trick is shocking.
