      Advantages

      Disadvantages

you get what you pay for: high price, high performance

I purchased the Miele Automatic TT5000 Automatic about six months ago (summer 2010) with a degree of trepidation: "Which" consumer magazine, that, at the time I subscribed to, had given the product rave reviews....but had been contradicted on the "Which" consumer forum (and others) with suggestions of a fundamental design flaw and poor build quality. The overriding consensus seemed to be that a "...black piece consistently broke of the rear". . This seemed to distinctly contradict the very good reputation of the Miele brand for longevity of its electrical products.

I was upgrading from an old Hitachi cylinder cleaner that, in my opinion, lacked suction for my deep pile carpets, therefore, not only did the product require a long-lasting quality but also, perhaps more importantly to me, the practicality of being very efficient at its role. The cleaner is certainly that! On the "Turbo" setting it practically sticks to carpet to the extent that, without the "Turbo Head" my girlfriend has not got the strength to push it! In fact that's a useful tip: using the turbo head the majority of the time on all surfaces is far easier than using the "standard" fitted head. My girlfriend and I went into the local John Lewis store to test this and other cleaners, even those of a comparable price, and believe me none of the half dozen we tried came even close to its suction power. It definitely "ticks" the power box!

Durability has not (as yet - November 2010) proved a problem: I have had one occasion where the lid that exposes the bag and accessories came off it's sprockets but this occurred only once and was rectified in about 2 minutes.

So what else do I like? The two adjustments to the extending handles make it very easy to adjust for the users height and reach; the accessories, particularly the turbo head and the small upholstery brush are extremely easy to change and useful.

What don't I like? The orange gauge on top of the unit indicating when the bag is likely to need changing is very misleading: if you use the turbo button and place the cleaner head on the floor it always reads full- the only way to get an accurate reading seems to be using the standard "eco" power setting and lifting the head of the floor! The price of replacement bags seems rather high, although purchasing online rather than in-store marginally reduces this.

The questions you need to ask yourself are:

      1. / Am I prepared to pay more for this performance: this cleaner is at the high-end of the market.

      2. / If you are, is the extra cost of this model (about £30 extra at the time of writing) worth paying as against the model below. My girlfriend bought the next model down and despite my suspicion that the motor is identical, she maintains mine is marginally better. You pay your money..............J
