Advantages: Great suction, lightweight and easy to manoeuver - low noise levels
Disadvantages: the brushes on the head are difficult to clean. You have to keep buying new bags periodically
Having wanted a Miele vacuum cleaner for a long time after trying a friend's, I finally got the S5210. In my opinion, Miele produce the best vacuum cleaners on the market. Firstly, it's surprising how the price compares to other brands such as Dyson; £110 I paid for this model. It has a sleek design and a quality build - certainly not flimsy!
These vacuum cleaners have a reputation of lasting a long time which was another reason for my purchase - well it's been two years and the performance is still as good as when I bought it. The main plus point is how strong the suction is. It grabs everything without you having to vacuum over the same area over and over. For this you'd expect a lot of noise, but compared to other cleaners (especially the dreaded Dyson!) the noise level is very good indeed, with more of a whooshing noise than a grating mechanical noise.
You can change the strength of the suction, so to dust more fiddly ornaments, I simply turn the suction right down, place the brush attachment to the hose and voila!
And the tools are kept in one easy to reach compartment in the main body.
The vacuum cleaner itself is lightweight so cleaning the stairs is easier. You can hold the main body in one hand with its nice wide handle, and target the staircase holding the nozzle with your other hand. And if your arm does happen to get tired, the main body is slim enough that you can rest it on a step for a while. The cable is nice and long so I can pretty much clean the whole ground floor from one power point (I don't live in a huge house, just an average terrace, but it's still pretty good).
You can clean different surfaces, switching the brushes on the head for wood or laminate floors. The only thing I don't like is that the brushes don't protrude out far enough so clearing them of fluff is a nightmare.
I also have a high ceiling directly above the staircase, so the telescopic handle makes clearing the cobwebs a doddle.
The bag is easy to change, simply slide out and slide the next one in and close the lid and off you go. Although you have to keep buying new bags that are not so cheap, I find it's a far more hygienic option than a bagless cylinder you have to keep emptying - yuk! And they DO lose suction markedly as they fill up, I don't care what they say on the adverts - The Miele S5210 does not show a marked reduction in suction power until the bag is REALLY full!)
In conclusion, the S5210 is a quality item, with no silly gimmicks. It does what it's meant to - give great cleaning results as quickly and simply as possible. I'd definitely buy again!
Summary: A great buy! The S5210 cleans all kinds of surfaces really well at a great price.
