My girlfriend and I moved into a house last year and decided to get a hoover as opposed to the broom and dustpan we had at our tiny one bedroom flat last year. Admittedly I dont do a lot of the hoovering so she went out and bought this hoover. At first I was quite taken with the aesthetics of the hoover, very stylish and looks very advanced (which it is), for the price of £60 it seems to do the job a usually more expensive dyson would do. I think the price has gone up since so we were quite lucky but even at £100 I would recommend this product - my advice however would be to shop around and not just rely on argos whose prices seem to fluctuate quite a bit.
We have a small house but few rooms so they tend to be quite large, we have two conjoining rooms also but the 6.5 metre cord seems to be plenty to maneuvere around the house - nothing more annoying than having to unplug and reconnect to do two ends of the same room!
The smaller hoover head also make tasks such as cleaning the sofa very easy - we have a pet bird who leaves crumbs, poop and parts of a shredded argos catalogue everywhere but this tool is great and gets into all sorts of nooks and crannies. I know alot of Vacuums have them now but this is a feature we can't do without!
The suction is strong and picks up the trickiest bits of dirt and the noise is bearable - for a limited time of course! It is easy to remove the container, to empty and it is easy to wash out if you like keeping it clean - personally I don't really see the point as it's just going to get used the next week but it's still handy for those who are better than I! On the other hand, obviously the filter does need regular cleaning, we havent had to change ours yet so it has last quite a while with no technical problems so far (touch wood!).
I chose this cleaner based on reviews via the Argos website - 280 reviews and 4.5 stars. I wanted a Dyson...but we had just moved house and I was only choosing a Dyson on reputation and previous experience at my parents so really, I was being awfully prejudice by not giving the other vacuums another look. I conceded once I looked at the price and wondered if I would ever find a decent vacuum for my fairly measly budget (measly when looking at the cost of a Dyson).
So at £59.99 at the time I reserved it and picked it up. I have JUST checked the price now and it is back up to £119.99 - I truly picked a bargain!!!! It may seem a funny choice to someone who only owns a bird (feathered of course) and lives with just my partner (does that constitute a 'family'?) but the Family and Pets Bagless Cleaner (bagless meaning I can pretend it's a Dyson) indicated a product designed to tackle the toughest - and I have some pretty nasty looking critters in the corners of my house, and if I looked closely maybe some children clinging on to my carpets - I needed to know they wouldn't escape the suction.

Well, it is a GORGEOUS red colour with a clear cylinder belly which allows you to watch the rising level of dirt, dust, hair, empty seed cases and feathers. It is upright with 2 pedals either side of the suction head allowing you to turn it on with your right foot and release it to tilt via the left. There is a dial at the centre which allows you to choose the type of floor you are on. I won't lie - the one time I moved it off the default laminate/wood floor setting it made a bit more noise than I liked so I put it back. This function has proved perfectly sufficient for the different surfaces in my home. The noise was obviously increased suction (for those with really hairy dogs, or children - hairy ones). It's not unbearable but unnecessary in my house where actually the default function sufficed perfectly on all surfaces.
The hose has an easy grip handle; is a reasonable 3 metres and is released using a red button that sits alongside the hose when it is in the upright position. The red hose can then be guided around and your add-ons added on.
The power cord is 6.5 metres which is ample for your typical room but I like my cords long so room to room is done with fairly minimal changes of socket. I would definitely want a longer cord with this in future but I am being choosy. My home is circular so I would love something that allowed moving around the rooms (no doors) with no changes!
I thought in my specs list I would keep the wording given about the product for some of them- manual rewind is hilarious. Basically you wind the cable by hand...! This is fairly typical although I miss my old car vacuum where you would press a button and the cord would whip back in to the vacuum (and you probably sustained an ankle injury from the frantic flapping of the plug on its way back!)
It is fairly lightweight but not an overall practical one for the stairs. I can manage it but I know my mother who's a tad frailer than me would find it an effort to hold and the hose, although ample for most things, doesn't have the most awesome reach at 3 metres.
***My Opinions and Experience***
Well I do like this vacuum a whole lot and would actually go as far to say that it is a lot better and more reliable than all previously owned Dyson's, at a fraction of the cost. It's a good boy vacuum too - comes in red ya know but sadly, no go faster stripes. It has strong, consistent suction and doesn't lose power. It can get a tad noisy but hey - it's doing its job.
A con - cannot do small rugs. It's just too strong, it sucks them up! My vacuum is very busy in my house. It picks up every ounce of dirt and then it has the wonderful job of being stood upright whilst I get the hose and chase down the lanky sodding spiders lurking everywhere. They are awful...but they are learning to keep away. SO I'm in the bathroom and its tiled floor - but I happen to leave the vacuum with a corner on the edge of the bath mat. I'm distracted reading a gruesome, hairy fiend his last rites and suddenly wisps of fluff are appearing. I panic - OH MY GOD THE SPIDERS AND THEIR WEBS ARE SHOOTING BACK OUT OF THE VACUUM CLEANER TO GET ME and prance about frantically because since moving to this spider ridden house I have developed an irrational fear of the little sods, and then I realise it's MUNCHING MY RUG! Hey take your mind out the gutter - seriously the corner of my bath mat is now fluff free and thread bare - and that is when the vacuum is stood and suction is redirected for the most part to the hose.
A huge plus is this special pet tool. Apart from the typical longer plastic bit which is good in corners, you can attach a mini vacuum head onto your hose! Seriously it's a mini imitation of the bigger head at the base of your vacuum and it has its only little roller and everything. My sofas are immaculate. I love it. For those of you finding yourself always brushing dog hair of the sofa after the dogs decided it's his for an hour's kip, it is perfect. Maintains the strong suction, it takes off all the rubbish - hair, crumbs, annoying bits of white something that appear on your dark brown sofa. No - it doesn't rip your sofa to shreds either - it is a genius little add-on which satisfies my OTT cleaning habits. Bliss. Your sofa cleans up via your mini vacuum head - it is just perfect.
So, how much can one woman love her vacuum? Well I have to say it has a little piece of my heart for keeping the crumpled bodies of the lanky ones in its bagless grave yard ; it looks good, it has amazing suction and its keep my home clean. It really is a workhorse for those with pets and pesky, smelly and dirty children. You could probably use the little suction head, just line your kids up and vacuum them standing! Yes I would like a bigger hose (sorry guys, bigger IS better) and I would like a longer lead (how demanding!) but these things are minor and are really a matter of personal choice. People will always complain about lead length - what's fine for a little flat won't work for a mansion but this length is ample for each of my rooms. I wasn't happy about the rug, I was just thankful it came from Primark...oh and I could just turn it over...but apart from what I only see as its eagerness to please - this vacuum is an excellent, well made product and shockingly...many, many times better than a Dyson.
All the good reviews you read about this vacuum are true! We bought one - based on the reviews - because we could never get our bedroom carpet properly clean with out Meile Cylinder Vac. Our bedroom isn't huge (5mx5m) but we still had to empty our new vac 4 times (blush!) on the first use even after an initial run-over with our cylinder vac.Suction is powerful and it cleans brilliantly. Works on Laminate, short pile (Berber) and long pile with equal cleaning power. On-board tool storage is neat and tidy, turbo tool great on stairs, and flexible hose allows all the stairs to be cleaned in one shot. The only downside is that the cable could do with being about 1m longer. Apart from that, a great vacumm, highly recommended.
I only bought this vacuum as it was on special and the reviews I read on it were pretty good. My previous vacuum ( a much more expensive Dyson) had just given up the ghost in a cloud of smoke, smoldering so much it put outdoors in case it burst into flames. I wash short on cash, but needed a vacuum right away. I wasnt expecting a great deal as we had only paid £59 for this but was very pleasantly surprised.
The vacuum is a nice smallish red machine that fits easily into a corner. I can't say as I care much about style or appearance on somthing like this, I care how it works. This one works brilliantly. It is the best hoover I have owned, even better than the dyson I owned before this. I have had to adjust the settings on it, as it just lifts up the whole rug if you dont bring it up a bit.
This is without a doubt the most powerful hoover I have owned. I couldn't believe the difference. My rugs looked like new when I first used this. I do believe it has lost just a bit of power over the 2 years or so I have owned it, but it is still growing strong, and I am very happy with this vacuum.
Other advantages to this are :
It is fairly lightweight (6.9 kg) so easy enough to trail up and down stairs. It maintains its powerful suction with attachments, which are easily enough fitted.
It is really easy to clean. There is a fine mesh screen around the hepa filter which collects all the debris. A quick wipe and it is all away. The hepa filter stays clean much longer than with my dyson because so much fluff is caught by the wire mesh, which I usally wipe every few days.
It does not leave dust floating around in the air like many hoovers.
Picks up pet hair easily, as well as crumbs, dirt and ground in playdough, and my hair as I shed more than the dog does.
Has survived hoovering up socks, lighters, ink pens, toys, sweets and various other items that do not belong in a vacuum cleaner on several occasions, although in one case the belt ended up broken. This was easy to replace, costing us less than £3.00.
Another reviewer felt this was noisy, but I do not find this any louder than one would expect for this type of item. Surely all vacuum cleaners make noise. I'm not quite sure how to describe sound level. I certainly have no idea as to decibels, but you do not need to shout to be heard over this. Nonetheless, it would be rather annoying if you are trying to listen to the telly.
I do think the replacement filter for this is dear - about £13 by the time one pays postage. I have never replaced this but continue cleaning with an old paintbrush and the occasional proper wash.
I have all laminate flooring in my house , with the exception of the stairs. I do have throw rugs in each room though, so of which are fairly large. I find that this hoover does and excellent job on the laminate flooring, the rugs, and the stairs although an attachement is needed for the stairs as the vacuum itself is to large to get each stair properly. The provided turbo tool for pet hair works very nicely, removing not just the pet hair, but also all the dirt that gets tracked up, plus the occasional smashed crisps etc...
A few basic specs:
side suction to lift everything on the edges.
one touch emptying of bagless chamber.
turbo tool for pet hair
6.5 metre electric cord
3 metre hose
2 year manufacturers guarantee
Overall - I am extremely happy with this machine. It was a very low price, it works well and has been reliable.
As always, when I replace a large electrical item, I update the review. In this case I am not lowering the rating because the cause of failure was our fault, not the manufacturers. My husband attempted to twist off a section that wasn't meant to twist off. He hadn't noticed the door at the top to remove the filter.
This did maintain good suction as long as we owned it. we have replaced it with a Henry, and the Henry is more powerful, but this was quite good. We did have some trouble with belts breaking on us later, but this coincided with switching to heavy shag rugs, and I have been told this common - not a manufacturers defect. As the machine grew older, finding the belts became more difficult and we did have to order online and wait for delivery. I do still fell this a good machine, and would have considered buying another had there been one at the same price now. As it is, I'm glad I bought the Henry, but I still have no major complaints with this machine.
This Morphy Richards 73288 Family & pets Bagless Upright Cleaner is the best vacuum cleaner I have had. I recently replaced my Vax because I was sick of the fact that the hose didn't extend at all but was a bit stretched so wouldn't stay in its holder either.
I was drawn to this vacuum firstly by the special offer price, normally priced at £149.99 it was on a better than half price offer at £59.99. Then I was drawn by the gorgeous red colour, this vacuum is not only practical but looks quite stylish too.
I have a very hairy dog that leaves hairs all over the place, some are hard to vacuum up with previous vacuums but this one is very powerful (1800W) and has no trouble picking up all the hairs and dust. The first time I used it I was surprised to see how much was it had picked up, which meant my last one had left a lot behind.
Some of the features I like about this are the wide head which cleans a wider surface area and it has edge to edge cleaning so it gets right up to the walls, it is light weight so easy to push and lift up, it is very easy to empty, it has a pet turbo tool to attach to the hose which gets the stubborn hairs off the stairs, the hose actually stretches on this one which means I can clean the stairs with the vacuum at the bottom without having to carry it up the stairs with me.
The top handle detaches and the attachments fit onto the end of the metal pole making it more comfortable to handle while using the hose attachments and it also means less poles clipped onto the side of the vacuum.
The only downside is the vacuum can sometimes tip over when using the hose and attachments but I don't find this too much of a problem. Overall I love this vacuum and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new one. I would keep you eyes open for a special offer though as I got a real bargain and I think the offers come up regularly.
