Advantages: cleans brilliantly

Disadvantages: none

I bought the Morphy Richards Grime Buster about three weeks ago. I had been using my next door neighbours steam cleaner and found that it was excellent for cleaning carpets. (After a vax machine even spitting on the carpet cleaned it better!).

The Morphy Richards grime buster is small and has two wheels that allow you to move it around easily. It is very light and has a carry handle on the top.

Getting Started

The water tank has a 1.8 litre capacity and this will produce enough steam to clean a good-sized lounge carpet. The tank has a filler cap that is unscrewed to put the water into the tank. A funnel is supplied with your grime buster to stop spillages. It is important not to overfill the tank otherwise you will find water everywhere! There are two buttons on the top of the machine – an on/off button and a steam on/off button. The steam button switches on the boiler to make the steam. You cannot use detergents in the machine because it will clog up the boiler and hoses its for water only.

The hose is plugged into the machine via a flap and there is a button that stops the hose from becoming detached. The hose is approximately 2 metres long. There are two extension tubes that come with the machine; these are attached for carpet cleaning or for reaching high places.

It takes around 10 minutes for the boiler to produce enough steam. A green light will come on to show you that the cleaner can now be used. The steam will then come continuously until all the water is used up – then the refill button will be lit. It is important that once you open the filler cap that you allow a few minutes for the boiler to cool down. It you put cold water straight in it will spit back out and cause a right mess (of course you know that I have experienced this first hand!)

Cleaning Carpets

There is a large brush head that attaches to the extension tubes for cleaning carpets. There is also a faci
lity for attaching a cloth over the bristles. I use a spray bottle filled with carpet cleaner. I spray the carpet first and then go over it with the steamer brush – these brushes get into the pile to lift the dirt. I then attach the cloth and go over the carpet again to lift the dirt. I find this gets all the stains out of my carpet, and the brushing action lifts the pile back up. The steam evaporates leaving your carpet slightly damp but it can be walked on immediately.

Upholstery

I use the upholstery brush to go over my sofa and chairs. Again I spray them with carpet cleaner and then go over with the upholstery brush. It is worth doing a test patch first somewhere that cant be seen because materials like dralon cannot be steam cleaned.

Other applications

There is a jet nozzle that is brilliant for cleaning ovens and grimy areas around the kitchen. I have a cat that loves to eat his food off the floor. This food is really difficult to get off and many a time I have been on my hands and knees with a scrubbing brush. Now I just blast it with steam and it mops up brilliantly. You can also clean tiles and shower doors with this just blast them with the nozzle and wipe them clean. It is also good for cleaning grout that has become discoloured.

There are hundreds of applications and I won’t bore you rigid by listing them all but I will say that as far as cleaning is concerned it is a godsend. No more scrubbing for me!

The cost of the Grime Buster is £199 – I got mine from a catalogue but if you shop around you could probably find it cheaper. I know it’s expensive but I think that its pays for itself in reducing elbow grease to a minimum.

I cannot recommend this product enough – it really cleans and saves on time and effort (both of which is very precious with two children!!)
