Advantages: cheap, light, unobtrusive

Disadvantages: tips over doing stairs

When we went looking for a new "hoover" a few years ago, we knew what we were looking for. Compared to the old one, we wanted it to be more powerful, quieter, cleaner, lighter, more reliable, cheaper to buy and easier to use. Unfortunately, the Dyson DC01 turned out to be none of these. Now we were using the same criteria in buying a replacement for the Dyson…

Power
Can’t tell if it is as powerful as the Dyson or not, but certainly powerful enough. Doesn’t blow away light debris like the Dyson does and hasn’t chewed bits out of the flex yet either.

Noise
Hurrah! A lot quieter than the Dyson.

Cleanliness
No worse that the Dyson, take out the bucket and tip it in the bin. If Dyson hadn’t invented this silly way of emptying vacuum cleaners then we wouldn’t be stuck with Panasonic’s being the same… what somebody needs to do is (re)invent a cleaner with a disposable bag. Take it out and throw it away – clean and simple!

Lightness
Hurrah! Much lighter than the Dyson. Still tips over but lighter when it falls on your foot.

More Reliable
Too early to tell. Hasn’t blocked or chewed the flex yet. The tools still fit and stay on. Much simpler arrangement for the beater head – the hose plugs in the back!

Cheaper to Buy
Hurray! Cheaper than a Dyson, under £80…

Easier to Use
Hip hip hurray! After three years of frustration with the Dyson, the car is clean, at last. A long thin nozzle on a properly shaped wand that fits into all those awkward nooks and crannies under the seats and doesn’t have you standing outside with the tube under your chin!

Summary
No fancy colour schemes, no great claims, no futuristic advances. A cheap, unassuming, simple, utilitarian, appliance. Use it and when it eventually gives up, throw it away. Unlikely to be enshrined in design museums a
nywhere and because of that, highly recommended.

I find dysons fall apart very quickly, we've had to order new parts for ours. Any idea how long this would last?
