I got this vacuum from my mum, it was her second replacement of the same model due to broken motors, and while this one's motor held up, she had already had to buy another vaccum to use while Panasonic was sorting out all the replacements. When she finally got one without a faulty motor she'd understandably gone off it, and was liking the Dyson she'd bought while it was away, so she gave it to me. I can't judge it too much on it's performance on carpets, as I only had one when I got the vacuum and now have none, but I really didn't think much of it's pick up, it was fine with anything non-fibrous, but any fluff or anything that had a bit of cling was a bit more difficult to lift. I only have one short haired cat so it didn't have a very hard task to pick up the few hairs there were, but it struggled. I think they've focused too much on design gimmicks like the beater bar lifting and lowering depending on whether it's in floor or carpet mode, rather than it just doing the job well. The instructions are full of over complications with regard to how often and how far to turn the filter dial on top to get the most suction. They're very proud of the whole 'economic' aspect of it, but it's only economic if it works, not if I have to use it twice as long as another vaccuum. I would have liked a longer cable and hose, they really aren't practical and no-one wants to change plug sockets every few minutes. More fabric and furniture extensions would have been nice too. That said, on the wooden floors, it does a decent job, not really any better than a sweeping brush and not as good as a tesco value vacuum I had as a student, but it works. It's saving grace is how easy it is to empty, I don't have to enlist my husband to help, just two clips off, tip over the bin and back on. For the money though I really would expect more than this though, and from Panasonic.
