Advantages: Easy to use, easily rented

Disadvantages: Noisy!

I'm just about to rent out the flat I live in and move to a house (how exciting). The agents we are using suggested getting the carpets cleaned before letting tenants move in.
Ever one to save some cash, we rented a "Rug Doctor" from Homebase.

To rent one you need a household bill no more than three months old, plus another form of ID, I used my passport. The machine cost £19.99 to rent and they took a £10 deposit-all from my debit card so didn't need to get any cash out.
The carpet shampoo they had at Homebase was pretty pricey so we just got some of the anti-foaming stuff and I got some shampoo from the pound shop.
The machine is easy to set up, shampoo and hot water in the very bottom part, anti-foam in the top, white bit.

To use it, you clearly plug it in and switch it on, it is very noisy so don't do it early in the morning unless you want your neighbours to complain! To get it cleaning, you push a button on the top and that causes the water and shampoo to get moving, once you can see the shampoo on the carpet, you pull the machine towards you and the shampoo is sucked up into the top bit.

One load of water and shampoo doesn't do that much carpet, about 4sqm so you need to refill it quite often.

We've only had the carpets about 18months and there are just the two of us, no kids or pets so the carpets were pretty clean. Still, lots of fluff and a bit of dirt came out so I guess it would just take a bit longer to do a really dirty carpet.

It leaves your carpet damp but not soaking, you can feel it through your socks though! They do recommend not walking on the carpet for five or so hours-not always practical!

I'm going to give it a 5 for maintenance because we only rented it so don't have to worry about looking after it!

The machine was easy to push and pull along the floor although my OH did the lifting in and out of the car and up and down the stairs. He said it wasn't too heavy but he is 6ft 4 so I think for ladies, it would be quite heavy.

Attachments were available at Homebase but we didn't get them as well as we hand clean our upholstery.

Summary: Easy to use, easy to rent, sparkly carpet!

I own a carpet cleaning company and we use Rug Doctors following answers.
1. There are actually 2 machines the Mighty Pro and the Wide Track cleaning effect on both is the same. The difference is size.
Mighty Pro tank 9.5 ltires weight 16 kg.
Wide track tank 14litres weight 20kg
2. There are two settings deep clean and quick clean when using deep clean a lot more water is injected in and that is when you are looking at 12 hours plus drying time. Quick dry 3-4 hours max.
3. Switch when cleaning -only use deep clean on really filthy areas,
4. There is a hand tool to clean stairs, upholstery and corners.
5. Tilt it slightly backwards when moving forward and just pull gently when moving backwards. Not heavy at all.
6. The machine is desiged so you can work standing straight, the handle has various postions therefor no back or neck pain.
7. There is no system besides those using micro sponges which is 100%dry after finishing. Evne the micro pads are actually a low moisture system. And I sincerely doubt due to the cost of the machines and size that you will find anyone hiring to the public.
8. The comment reference solutions being expensive I get about 500 sq ft out of a litre, thats an average house. The solution is geared to work with the machine which is patented. Shelf life well over a year. So is a litre all that expensive.
9. Cleaning time expect to clean 350 - 500 sq ft per hour, as with any other machine.

A useful review for anyone who plans to rent the machine from supermarkets.
However for the benefit of all consumers a bit more info would be great here such as:

Actual weight of the machine - as others have indicated, is it heavy to push and pull across the floor?

Are there any smaller attachments on the machine to deal with upholstery or stairs?

How big is the tank capacity?

Sure ly if it leaves carpets damp to the point you can feel it through socks then it doesnt fully dry out carpet thus not justifying 5 star ratings?

If you update your review please message me. Ultimately, there are better machines around but its a bargain when you can rent it instead of buying it.

Is it hard work to push and pull the machine, some of these larger machines can really hurt the neck and back when using?
