Advantages: Excellent suction, innovative and clever design, no need to buy bags or filters

Disadvantages: Quite heavy and bulky

My Numatic Henry died recently after years of loyal service, so I needed to get another vacuum cleaner. But which one? Having been given my Henry, I had never bought a vacuum cleaner before. The choice is endless and bewildering.

I decided on a bagless for two reasons. The cost efficiency of not having to buy all those paper bags and being able so see all that fluff and dust accumulating in the canister spurs you on to clean more efficiently and more often.

So I took the plunge and bought a Sanyo SCX100 Pulse in the January sales for £79 RRP £140 - Bargain!!

Even at full retail price, this machine represents great value. The cleaning power is amazing, I was disgusted to see how much dust and particles it was able to pick up, even though the carpets looked clean.

The machine is well built, I have no fears about its long term durability. The downside of this is that for some people it may be on the heavy side. It has some great design features such as the DustPress system that allows the cleaner to hold more dust, therefore less emptying is required. When the canister is full, the dust can be ejected by a few turns of the spiral mechanism from the top of the canister - much more hygenic and convenient than other bagless designs.

The tools are all stored on the machine, are easy to use and well constructed. Unlike the Dysons or Electrolux bagless machines, the Sanyo has lifetime filter that can be washed by hand and replaced, rather than having to buy expensive filters.

In my opnion, having used my mother in law's upright Dyson, this machine is better constructed with easier to use tools and a more efficient dust disposal system. If you want a great bagless cleaner and don't care about brands or beauty - buy the Sanyo. If you must have a Dyson, then you must have a Dyson. But is a Dyson really worth all that extra money? I doubt it!
