Advantages: not many parts to go wrong

Disadvantages: doesn't dry the carpet as well as hoped

Previous to this I had a bissell upright proffessional carpet/floor cleaning system.

That system cost 4x the amount of this vax carpet cleaner. The winner...? the vax hands down.

As it's not an upright there is much less to go wrong with this, it's easier to clean the bits and the main unit. The cleaning quality is very good although it doesn't dry the carpet as well as I would like - but then again going back to the price I can see why. The cord wraps around the unit for storage and the parts fit together firmly and only fit one way so mistakes are not possible.

We use this to clean up after an elderly dog who has the odd accident and also to suck up the water when our dishwasher flooded the kitchen and find this to be a good sturdy basic device.

If you're on a budget then this is great, if you're not on a budget, I find it hard to justify spending 4x as much on something that's only a little bit better in places...

Summary: do buy it.
