Advantages: All round ergonomics, Efficiency, Stunning attention to detail

Disadvantages: Cable and hose could be longer, Wheels and head rollers too small, cord rewind a little weak

This is arguably the most sculptored and ergonomically design beauty you could find. Attention to even the smallest design detail is apparent - from its graceful wand with its magic properties through to the easy-grab dust compartment. Even the swivelling hose tool is finished in soft rubber in curvaceous lines to make holding it a pleasant experience. I've tried to fault the design of this machine, and, for the first time ever, completely failed to find anything significanytly wrong with it and I'm left complaining that the hose and cable could really have been just a little longer (to reach the top of the stairs and adjacent room easily), the rear wheels should have been larger and bigger rollers at the front would have helped manouverability.

I know it sounds crazy, but I'm so impressed with the VAX's aluminium and purple finish and form that I actually bore guests - showing it to them as a contemporary design delight. The AVC1 claims the highest power to suction ratio - a 1300 hundred watt motor which generates 300 air watts (only a little less than the unreliable top of the range Dyson), so it's light on electricity consumption.

Oh but does it work? Yes it works well and the AVC1's design means that even elderly or those who suffer from bad backs and arthritis never ever have to bend down for anything - all the controls are high up and this one's almost unique for an upright in having cord rewind. the most inspired feature though is the quick-grab wand - it's wonderful along with the lowered weight of the machine through use of sculpored aluminium.

The design team ought to get a prize - every detail of texture on switches and rubberised handles has the attention to detail of an inspired design fetishist who loves their job. Stroke it, press every switch, enjoy its flowing graceful lines and clean-up with a grin on your face.
