I just moved into a one bed flat. Ordinarily, I prefer an upright as I tend to find that they have better suction and are better for bigger areas. I moved to a new home a couple of years ago and decided that I would use my old vacuum to aid in cleaning my old flat after the removal men had left and treat myself to a new model. The machine I bought, (not a Vax) works brilliantly upstairs, because that is where it lives- I cannot use it on the stairs nor carry it down the stairs to use, it is simply too heavy.
