A Lightweight Hoover that Packs a Punch
Member Name: kat1234
Advantages: Lightweight, good suction, easy to use
I found it on the Tesco Direct website on a decent offer, at nearly half price at £60 so decided to purchase from here to take advantage of the offer, with the added bonus of clubcard points too. Incidentally, it is now priced at £109.97 on the website (March 2011).
The hoover is a lightweight cylinder hoover, which is bagless and works using a Hepa filter. The hoover weighs just 6.3kg, so is easily portable. The unit is 104cm in height (this is the measurement using the extended arm), 32cm deep and 34cm wide which makes it very easy to store. The cable length is 6m and there is an automatic cord wind-up feature, which can be activated using a push pedal on the base of the unit.
There is adjustable suction capacity, with suction power given as 240W. Motor Power is 2000W. The suction hose length is 1.5m, which is repeatedly folded, so to be extendable and collapsible. There is an extendable metal tube that can be inserted into this hose to provide further reach.
A plastic crevice tool and brush tool are provided, together with the main vacuum head which has a setting for carpets and one for hard floors.
The vacuum also comes with a two year manufacturers guarantee.
The hoover is made of clear and purple plastic, as per the picture above. At the rear of the main unit, there are two grey plastic pedals, one to turn the machine on and off and one to recoil the cord. Under this is where the plug is recoiled into, you cannot see any of the coiled up wire from the outside. There is also a grey plastic slider button, which can be used to select the suction power required using a sliding scale.
The unit is supported by two large grey and purple plastic wheels to the rear and the hose is attached at the front of the unit. On top of the main unit is the cylinder, which is easily detached using a grey plastic button at the top of the unit. This has a grey handle on top for ease of handling The cylinder is clear so you can see how much dust and dirt it has collected, and when it needs emptying - there is a line on the cylinder giving the maximum fill level. Inside the cylinder, is the filter, encased with a white plastic cylinder.
EASE OF USE
The hoover is really simple to use. There are only basic controls, with a simple on/off switch and a power selector. The metal bar can be easily extended to a height that suits the user by compressing a button on the tube and pulling the tube, which is grooved, to the desired height. This height will then be 'locked in' and the tube will remain at that length throughout use. The vacuum head is easily attached and removed from the end of the metal tube (this is a little stiff initially but soon eases up), but remains firmly in place during use.
The hoover head has a simple push button to select whether you require the hard floor or carpet setting. By depressing this to the carpet setting, a thin black brush pops out of the bottom of the head. When the hard floor setting is selected, this brush bar is retracted and the head underside is smooth. The crevice tool and brush tool are equally easily attached to the tube once the hoover head is removed.
In use, the hoover is really lightweight and easy to carry up and down stairs and around the house. When hovering carpets, the head glides easily over carpets - and even some of my thicker rugs - without needing too much effort or encountering too much resistance. The unit follows you around nicely on it's two wheels and you never feel like you are having to drag this around. The tools can be a little trickier to use as you attach these to the metal bar, which can only be shortened to a certain length. This can make it hard to get your grip and angle the crevice tool as you would like. However, it is usually achievable with a little bit of angling and adjustment, just a little more tricky than I would ideally like!
The cord is a generous length, which means I never have the problem of over extending the hoover and, consequently, pulling the plug from the socket. However, with the hoover being so lightweight, it can tip over if you pull it along too quickly/roughly. The only problem that I have had with the hoover head is directing it accurately, particularly into corners. The head is not fixed completely, and is hinged to allow some rotation, but I would say this is only somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees, so it is not as flexible as perhaps I would like.
The cylinder is also really easy to remove and empty. The top of the cylinder unscrews by twisting and this can then just be emptied by tipping the contents into the bin before replacing.
At 2000W motor power, this is a pretty powerful hoover. Happily, this is not reflected in the noise level created by the unit - it is actually pretty quiet when turned on. The suction power provided is pretty strong, which you can easily feel when using the tools. The hoover head itself does not always suck up all visible dirt - most notably sock fluff - on the first movement over, so I usually run the hoover over my carpet a couple of times in each room. This removes all visible fluff and dirt.
The biggest problem that I have in my house is hair, of which I have a fair amount that seems to molt at quite a rate. The hoover seems to cope with this well and the brush bar, in particular, helps to remove these from the carpet. The brush bar can also be de-haired easily by simply pulling this from the bar. In the past, I have had the problem of hair wrapping around the roller style brush bars but the design of this unit means that this is not a problem here.
The hard floor setting, in particular, is very effective. I use this on my wooden floors and kitchen area and all crumbs are removed immediately. It is also gentle on the floors - I was initially worried about scratching my laminate floors by using this, but it glides over them smoothly and causes no damage.
MY OVERALL OPINION
This hoover meets my needs perfectly. The design is compact, meaning that it is easily stored in my understairs cupboard without getting in the way. It is lightweight so really easy to move up and down the stairs, as well as ideal for use on the stairs themselves. The cylinder is really easy to empty and replace and not messy at all, as I have found some bagless hoovers to be.
The extendable metal tube reaches a height that is fine for me to use - I am about 5"8 - but I would say that this may not extend far enough to be comfortable for use for an extended period of time for people over 6"0 as it may make you bend your back further than you would like.
The suction power provided by the hoover is good, particularly when you are using the tools as this removes dirt and dust effortlessly. I am also really impressed at the low level of noise generated by the hoover - with past models I have been worried about putting the hoover on in the morning as I live in a semi-detached house and didn't want to disturb the neighbours. This is no longer a worry with this model as it just makes a very low humming noise.
I am really pleased with my purchase and the performance of the product. I think I got an absolute bargain at £60 when this was on sale, but I would pay the full price if necessary as I genuinely believe it to be good value. Five stars from me.
Summary: Lightweight, easy to use and great suction power.
