A good hoover for pet owners

I have had my vax for over a year now and can't complain, the hoover comes with a lot of attachments, all easy to use and the manual states clearly which ones suit which purpose, the hoover had a lot of suction power and is very easy to take apart and put together again. It comes with a warranty which i've never had to use but it's good to have.

I have a large dog that moults a lot, he's only got a short coat but the amount of fur that comes off him twice a year could make several other small dogs!!! Thankfully this vacuum manages to get about 98% of the hair out of the carpet without needing to use any attachments, the hose is very easy to attach/detach and gets into every nook and cranny without a lot of hassle. The hoover is fairly easy to move around and the lead if very very long so no issues with having to switch to a nearer plug to get the other end of the room.

Middle of the road I think, not the best but good at this price.

A few weeks ago my vacuum went bang and I had to find another one but as I didn't have a lot of spare money I had to find one at a reasonable price. I found this vacuum in Argos and it had been reduced from £99.99 to £49.99, I decided to purchase this one as I thought that with Vax being a well known name I wouldn't go far wrong and it also comes with a 1 year guarantee.

The Vax Centrix 2 Pet is a bagless upright vacuum of 1800 watt, it has a 3 litre capacity and HEPA and antibacterial filters, the cord length is around 6 metres and it weighs approx 6.3kg. The vacuum is blue in colour with a clear collection point for dust and grime so you can see when it needs emptying.

The vacuum came in a sturdy box which was a lot smaller than I expected and I began to worry how big the vacuum was going to be, once home my husband began to assemble it. The vacuum once built is bigger than the box lead me to believe although I would have to say it is a little smaller in height than all other vacuums that I have used, I'm 5'8 so don't thin k it would be very comfortable to use for people much taller than me which of course gives the husband an excuse not to hoover. All in all it was easy to assemble and I would say the instructions are clear with both a worded description and a picture for each step of the assembly.

So once built it was plugged into the plug socket, the plug was ready attached for use, the cord I find is a little short and I can only just reach one end of the room to the other with a plug socket that is situated half way down the room and I am now unable to hoover my whole downstairs without having to resituate the plug. The vacuum is reclined by a pedal at the bottom and the power button is another pedal very near the recline button, I find that the position of the power button is a bit of a pain as when you go against the pile of the carpet it becomes a little hard to push and I then push it with my foot to give a bit extra power but I then keep catching the power pedal and turning it off.

The performance of the vacuum is brilliant, I have a black living room carpet with a short haired black and white dog who likes to moult needless to say the white hairs show up wonderfully but this vacuum has no problems lifting them. When vacuuming you can actually see the carpet lifting a little at the suction of the machine but on the other hand it doesn't pick up smaller objects such as beads which my 3 year old likes to leave all over the house, this I think is great as I know I'm not going to end up with a blocked vacuum because of what I have accidentally sucked up.

Emptying the vacuum is easy, with a twist and pull forward the collection chamber is released, the top simply twists off too and then you can empty the dirt. When emptying you are advised to remove the filter and gently tap against the bin to clean it and it should be replaced once every 12 months.

The hoover comes with a detachable hose, a wand which fits onto the hose and a turbo tool, to use the tools you have to disconnect the small hose from the vacuum base with a little twist and then attached it to the larger hose, I find this is a little annoying as it makes the job longer and think this is a bad design. The overall design of the vacuum is cheap plastic and it looks cheap, there is not much weight to it which I know will be great for some and it can be quite uncomfortable to use when doing the whole house in one go.

I would have to say that this is a basic vacuum and I wouldn't have been impressed if I had paid full price, there are as many negatives to go with the fact that it is good at picking up the dirt and keeping carpets fresh and clean. I am happy that I picked up something cheaply when I needed to but that is exactly what this should be....cheap.

Great vacuum if you have pets

My husband brought this vacuum for me after purchasing our Border Collie who malts all the time.

When I opened the box I honestly thought he had brought me a transformer, there were so many bits and pieces to clip on to the main body and then this strange little jug that went in the front. I thought it would last 10 mins at most before something was broken but I was happily proven wrong.

It comes with a pretty standard hose, an upholstery tool, a crevice tool and (the best thing) a stair cleaner (not sure whet it is really called) which clips onto the front of the vacuum.

The vacuum itself is very powerful, picking up even the smallest residue of dog hair around our house. It does this on many differend types of carpet, we have moved 3 times since it was purchased, and always provides great results. I even use it on my kitchen floor when I am pregnant as it saves me bending down.

The canister on the front has a large capacity and can take a full house worth of dog hair and crumbs before being full.

The upholstery tool is pretty effective but has trouble on long curtains as it is just attached to the hose and pulled down the material.

The crevice tool is again very standard, just a tube with a flat edge on it for gettin into the corners etc, but simple ideas work as it has no problems picking things up.

The stair cleaner is a godsend in a house with a dog, you attach it to the hose and it is basically a mini vacuum head which picks up anything and everything. I've quite often had to rescue coins from the vacuum after using this on the stairs without concentrating. It sometimes gets stuck after a while but a quick shake and it is back to working order before long.

The only downsides to this vacuum are, emptying the canister, cleaning the filter and the belt driving the reels at the front breaking. The belt is easily rectified, quick call to Vax and a new one will be sent to you.
Cleaning the filter is more hassle than dealbreaker. It is easy to do and access it just takes 24 hours to dry, and it really does. We tried to use it after leaving it out overnight following an evening clean and the vacuum wouldn't pick anything up due to the moisture still in the filter.
Emptying the canister is perilous if it is windy and I have often had a face full of dust when I haven''t been ceoncentrating. You first have to turn the lid, then remove the filter, before lifting the 2 parts apart from each other to empty in the bin. I always have to make sure it is back together properly as well as if you miss the turn on the lid at all it will have a likelyhood to fall away in your hand, cue much scrabling around trying to get all the pieces together without too much mess.

Overal la great vacuum, if a bit fiddly to empty and clean.
