Vax G:2 Pet Anniversary Edition Bagless Cylinder
Advantages: it's small and fit's in the cupboard easily
Disadvantages: it has no suction - it fills easily - it blew up!
After owning two different Dyson's (both of which I hated) I decided to have a change. When my cylinder Dyson started falling to bits I got fed up of buying replacement parts and decided on a new vacuum cleaner.
I chose the VAX G:2 Pet 30th Anniversary edition after finding it half price on the VAX website. I had seen it on Currys website and Argos priced at approx. £130 so when I found it priced at just £59.99 direct from VAX I ordered one straight away.
Now I know why they were selling them off cheap!
The vacuum cleaner came quickly and was really easy to put together. You get a few attachments, all the standard bits, plus one that is supposed to help when picking up animal hair. I was so excited with my new purchase that I used it straight away.
The first few uses were excellent. The suction was so great I could hardly push the thing along. It made quick work of my carpet and even though I wasn't using the pet hair nozzle it had no problem picking up my cat's hair. Then it all started to go horribly wrong.
After only about four or five uses the suction on my new vacuum cleaner disappeared! I decided that it must be full as the dust compartment isn't very big. I hate this job and do tend to put it off so I assumed once the compartment was empty my new vacuum and I would be friends again. The compartment is really easy to remove and open with just a little catch that you press and the bottom falls down releasing all the dirt. You then twist the top off and empty the second chamber that also houses the filter. The instructions recommend that you wash the filter every time you empty the vacuum cleaner but who has time for that! Anyway I put the bits back together and the suction was improved but nothing like it had been.
I carried on using the vacuum cleaner getting increasingly annoyed at its lack of suction, after all if a vacuum won't suck it's not much use. After only a couple more cleaning sessions I decided to have another look in the dust compartment and check out the filter too. The instructions state that you should gently tap the filter to release any trapped dirt and dust. I did this and found that it was absolutely bunged up with dirt so I gave it a good bash on the side of the bin.
This seemed to help immensely and off I set again for another few cleaning sessions. One day I found that the head of my vacuum cleaner had become damaged in the cupboard (I probably dropped the cylinder on it) and couldn't be used. I searched the VAX website for a replacement head but they only supply a universal one priced at £19.99 for this machine. In the end I found a universal one on ebay for just over £6 and sent off for it. While I was waiting for my new head to arrive I tried to use the super doper pet hair hoover upper that had come with my machine. What a waste of a piece of plastic that is! Firstly it is only narrow and so cleaning takes twice as long as normal and also there are brushes inside (you can see because it is transparent) that I assume are supposed to turn while you vacuum. The brushes didn't move there was hardly any suction at all and by the time I finished just one room I was exhausted and half crippled with back ache and the head was clogged up with dirt and hair.
Eventually the new head came and WOW the suction was back. Maybe the old head had been broken for a while and that had decreased the suction before? Anyway, I decided to give the filter a good clean to make the most of my improved suction. I gave it a gently tap but this didn't seem to help so I took a fork to it and used the prongs to gouge out the dirt. This helped with the suction and for the first time in ages I felt like my carpets had been properly cleaned.
Unfortunately the super suction didn't last and now I find that I have to gouge a fork around in the filter every time I use the vacuum cleaner if not twice. This is a pain and it is time consuming. I have four children and two cats and don't have time to be fiddling about with the filter every time.
The final straw came when I got the vacuum out a couple of days ago. I switched it on as normal and there was a strange smell and then the vacuum cleaner cut out. It has refused to work since. I only bought the machine in September 09 and it is now May 10! I have contacted VAX who are going to send me some paperwork and then I have to contact a courier who will take my machine away. VAX state that they will need the machine for 7 to 10 days and that if the problem has been caused by misuse I will be charged £35. As I only paid £59.99 and I hate the thing I might tell them to keep it!
Since buying this machine I have read a few reviews and they all say the same...a vacuum cleaner that doesn't suck!
In the meantime I have been using my Mother in Laws Henry and so far he is lovely!
