We bought a Vax Mach 4 Vacuum cleaner about eighteen months ago and we were very impressed with its performance but put off giving it a review because over the years while some vacuum cleaners have started off well they have been consigned to the bin after eighteen months. Not so this Vax model which continues to impress with its power and ability to deep down clean. Its Vax for us from now on.
I bought this machine to use in the family home. I chose it because it was a good price (the price is even better now); and was designed for both hard and soft flooring. It took at little while to put the pieces together, the instructions could be clearer. There are lots of different attachments which all fit onto the cleaner - although I only use one of them - the extendable hose and nozzle for the stairs. It is a heavy machine, heavier than I expected - might be something to do with all the gadgets! To change from hard to soft flooring and vice versa you have to stop the machine, put the handle upright, change the dial at the front, and restart. The extendable hose is excellent, previously I have had to carry the vacuum cleaner up the stairs and clean a step at a time - not for the elderly or infirm. The hose easily stretches up all the stairs. This is the first time I have had a bag-less vacuum cleaner. It was easy to detach and hold over the bin, but took a bit of shaking to empty it, you also need to use your fingers to clean the filter - rubber gloves / soap and water at the ready! The suction is good and the collecting area is small which means that I find myself emptying the bag and cleaning the filter frequently. One small thing, the handle does not easily click back upright; you have to ensure it is in place before you let go. Finally, although I bought it from John Lewis, it is very clear on the accompanying paperwork that you must use the Vax helpline for any problems - and you must register on-line or by post for the extended warranty, which is free. I would buy this machine again for it's excellent suction on both hard and soft floors at a very good price. If I had a lot of stairs I might think twice, it is heavy to carry up and down.
We bought this Vax about 3 months ago and although it was excellent to begin with there are some issues we have found with it. Firstly it is incredibly heavy. If you use the nozzle attachment (with the extendable hose) the elasticity of the hose is a bit OTT and does tend to topple over the hoover. I have often thought some poor old lady may end up with one of these bashing into her so be wary! Consequentially when it has toppled over it has broken several pieces off- namely one of the nozzle holders and the bottom clip for the lead which do not seem terribly sturdy. However it does come with a lot of attachements which are handy- especially the additional flexi-tube enabling you to hoover a whole flight of stairs from top to bottom. In addition the suction goes very easily as the filters get very clogged and are not very easy to clean. It does tend to retain dust and fluff and the suction now is not 1/2 as good as it was when it was purchased- particularly when you try to use the roller brush attachment as if the suction is not very good the brush does not revolve which renders it a bit useless. However Vax do offer a 6month free warranty which we signed up for but are yet to use. The suction does return short term if you give the hoover an exceptionally good clean after every few uses but it is not as good as some previous hoovers we have had. I think as long as it is well maintained it will serve a standard family home (such as ours) well for regular use and general hoovering. Saying that the suction is now still far better than previous hoovers we have owned and i would therefore recommend this product as long as you are happy to clean it often!
