The breakdown of our trusty little £40 hoover meant that we had to rush out and buy another one sharpish as we were decorating that weekend! Cue hunting through the pages of Argus and comparing the wattages and prices and reviews, and we decided that this one came out on top - Especially as it was half price at £99, which for a cyclone vacuum appeared very reasonable. I'll say to start with that I am anti Dyson- My parents have an upright, with which numerous stupid design flaws (i.e. having to unwrap alllllll the cord just to use the hose separately!!) never cease to bug me. So design and usability was also an important factor, but wanted a similar kind of performance to a Dyson. Another benefit of this model is that it comes with a 6year manufacturers guarantee, which you apply for online which I think is great. Upon unpacking the vacuum, we were surprised by the high quality of the fittings and unit. It comes with a telescopic tube, upholstery attachment, normal head thing (technical term anyone?), crevice attachment and brush attachment - All of which are all you need in my opinion so very happy with that! The main head also has a switch for carpet or hard floor which is good so can be used all over the place. The attachments are very good quality, durable plastic, and the telescopic tube is metal, and extends with a ratchet clip and button which is great. There are also storage clips for all attachments on the main hose and handle, which is great for keeping them all together. I won't review the looks of the machine as in my opinion they're not important or indeed relevant - Who buys a vacuum based on looks?! But there are nice little design features with this model - There is a hook on the main head, so that for storage the hook goes in to a hole on the unit and it stands up - Genius! The on/off and plug sucker thing are foot controlled and easy to use. The only downside is that this is not a lightweight vacuum, which some people might find difficult to use but its just ok for me. Suction wise, this vacuum is great. It sucks up every last little bit of dust/ hair without feeling like its going to rip up your carpet. We thought our previous vacuum was good, and you feared for the life of your rug with that one and therefore we assumed that it was great at getting up the dust and hair. However, one going over of the rug with this brought up so much dog hair that we wondered if the old one sucked anything up at all! This Vax vacuum really is impressive. It is also bagless, and the mechanism for emptying is very simple. The only thing is there is a carry handle on the bit of the cylinder that comes off for emptying, and I worry about carrying it in case the latch breaks or something. But the performance really is comparable to that of my parents Dyson so its a winner! The only negative I've found so far is that the HEPA filter is in one of the wheels in which the middle bit screws slightly to hold it in place. But moving it around I've found can dislodge this cover and so the filter flies out - BUt this may possibly be because I can be a bit vigorous with moving it around and will not deduct a star because of this. Despite this, I can't fault this purchase and have been nothing less than impressed with its performance. We have a dog which constantly sheds, and the fact that we can get the flat spotless with this is indicative of its performance. I was previously sceptical about Vax products, as I had used one of their carpet cleaners with less success. However my view of them has been restored! Would I pay £199 for this product? Well, only if I didn't know it had previously been on offer ;-) But for £99, I think this is a fantastic bit of kit and great value for money.
