      Disadvantages

      Sadly I can't recommend

I've noted when starting to write this review that the Vax Performance V-008T is currently retailing at £84.99 at Amazon.co.uk including delivery. I got a great bargain on this vacuum, half price at £45 down from £90 from Ponden Mill (a homeware store) about four years ago.

The reviews on Amazon aren't good at all - two reviews at one star out of five, both citing that the vacuum pushed out more dust than it picks up. Well, I have to say I had the same problem, after four years of excellent use, it started to push out dust. I was thinking that it had gone completely, when *pop*, the whole unit died on me (and why do vacuums only go when you have visitors coming over!?)

My husband (who is a trained professional - otherwise, I'd recommend you take any faulty item to a repair shop), found and fixed the fault. The air inlet had blocked with a piece of safety valve, which was forcing dust out of the unit, and causing it to overheat (hence the pop). Once the air inlet was cleared and the safety valve reaffixed, the vacuum worked perfectly again. So I would think that whilst I had four years of use before this problem arose, the users on Amazon weren't quite as lucky. If you have the same vacuum and have this problem - it is easily fixed .That said - I was lucky my husband could fix what he described as a design flaw, so it has to lose a star for that, as it would cost most people money to resolve (not to mention it being a total pain).

So - with that out of the way - what does the Vax Performance V-008T have to offer? It has a 1600w twin cyclonic system, in a bagless upright design (you can see when it's full as the main body is clear). It has a switch on the head for hard surfaces such as laminate and tile floors, as well as deep and short pile carpets. It advertises itself as being great for stubborn pet hair - I wouldn't know, I don't have pets - but it does get all the fluff from my wool rug right up.

It doesn't have any on board tools, other than a 2.2m stretch hose with nozzle attachment, which is very easy to assemble and use. The power cable is good and long, and the vacuum is not too noisy (which matters as I live in an apartment). Emptying the full dirt bin is easy - one catch and the entire thing is removed with a handle, so you can tip it right into the bin / a bin liner (do this before you vacuum, as it is still a rather dusty job, and invariably dust ends up floating around and settling). It doesn't require expensive replacement filters, as the filter inside can be cleaned (again, not difficult but rather dusty. Do it in the garden if you can, but not if your neighbours have the washing out!)

Overall, the Vax V008T is a good vacuum, easy to use, and has given me four years of service. The niggle with the overheating issue was resolved quickly, but I can imagine others simply replacing their vacuum if it popped, so it can't really be recommended as I can't recommend a vac with a design flaw which makes using it a bit like russian roulette! It's a terrible shame, as if it hadn't have had that issue, I'd be recommending it without a problem, as I can see it lasting me for many more years and I hoover at least three times a week. If I had to buy a new vacuum however, I wouldn't go for this model, but I would very likely go for the Vax brand.

A shame, but even the 12 month manufacturer's guarantee which comes as standard would not entice me to recommend or rebuy this particular model.

        worth every penney

never thought i would be reviewing a hoover but i tell you what it deserves the review, when my long lasting dyson fianlly broke down once and for all i had to get a hoover that was good for pet hair. i saw this one in the shop and just brought it on a whim.
It was very powerfull on long shagpile carpets and can easily be ajusted to do tiles and laminates, I did my stairs and althouth i had not long done them i fetched loads of old dust and dog hairs out of the carpet, it was like a new carpet afterwards so i got the bug and just went for it all round the house its just brilliant could not ask for better also when my girlfriend decicided to hoover up metal hair clips it blocked the hoover up so i phoned vax and they sent a courier to pick it up and as they could not fix it they sent a new one out within two weeks and that was over christmas
