Vax W90-RU-P Rapide Ultra 2 Pre Treatment Carpet Washer
Advantages: so easy to use
Disadvantages: cost of shampoo
Recently my cat decided to start urinating behind one of the chairs in the front room and I did not discover it until a guest sat in the chair and complained of cat wee. I was very embarrassed but the cat wee had dried and the bacteria had started to smell. I tried an old recipe of white wine vinegar and sodium bicarbonate. This alleviated the smell somewhat but it was still present and the sodium bicarbonate had left a nice white ring on the carpet.
I was on the brink of phoning a professional carpet cleaner until I remembered that my parents had recently bought a carpet washer. They rent out properties so after their tenants leave, they like to freshen the place up for their next guests. Their carpet washer was brand new and had never been used so it was my job to set it up from the box and give it its trial run.
*Price and availability*
I was surprised when I found out that the carpet washer cost over £200 pounds. It was bought from Curry's Electrical Store for £210.00. It is currently in the sale on Amazon.co.uk for £179.99.
After the trial run with my parent's machine, I was so impressed with it that I decided to purchase one of my own and managed to buy it on Amazon for this price.
The box that the machine comes in is humongous and really heavy. After getting rid of the packaging, you are left with the machine that needs a little assembly, a bottle of carpet cleaner washer, pre treatment solution and the instructions.
To assemble the machine, you need to attach the handle that clicks into place with a locking pin. The other thing that needed to be assembled is the pre-treatment kit. The wand needs attaching to the handle and then the tube needs wrapping around the holder so it doesn't get in the way.
*clear the room*
I found the best way for me to work was to clear the room I wanted to clean of furniture; the machine is really heavy and a bit bulky to start manoeuvring round things. You also need to plan your exit path so start at one side of the room and work your way towards a door.
It is worth vacuuming the room before using the cleaner as lint and dust can block it up.
I overcomplicated this part grossly by getting the dirty water and clean water tank mixed up. As soon as I realised this, I poured it away and started again. The clean water tank is located at the front of the machine at the base. Located directly behind the clean tank is the dirty water tank.
The pre treatment solution is designed to loosen dirt and grime
The first step was to remove the clean water tank, which simply clips off the front. There is a rubber cap on the bottom of the tank where you can pop the tap in and fill from here. I poured some of the pre-treatment solution into the clean water tank and then filled with warm water from the tap.
You then need to slot the tank back in place. For some reason, the plug does not fit that securely and as you go to slot the tank back on a bit of the liquid dribbles out underneath. This is not really a problem though as so long as you are doing it on the carpet you are going to clean, a little extra dribble is not really a big problem.
The pre treatment solution is sprayed from the wand and there is a little trigger to aim it. I only treated the two areas I have mentioned above, the hallway and the cat wee. In fact, I gave these a really good spray as I wanted to make sure they were going to get all the help they needed. The instructions do state to give stubborn stains a little extra attention.
Whilst the pre treatment is doing its thing, you may as well set the rest of the machine up for the big clean.
*Washing the carpet*
The step of filling the tank with the pre-solution is very similar to filling it up with carpet cleaner. You need a good 30 -40 ml of liquid and then fill the tank up to the fill line located on the side of the tank.
Replace the tank and it is now safe to plug your machine into the mains supply.
There is an on/off switch at the back of the machine which needs clicking to fire up the machine. Once on, you can hear the machine whirring and see the water in the tank bubbling. It is a really noisy machine! Similar to a vacuum cleaner there is a little foot pedal for you to click so the handle drops back to a comfortable level. Hold the handle and there is a little lever than needs holding whilst you clean. As soon as the lever is depressed, the machine starts to pull away and you need to pull back on the machine so you can control it. It is not a matter of pushing the machine, but holding it back as it seems to want to float off.
You need to direct the machine slowly and in straight lines, pulling the machine forwards and backwards and then moving on to the next patch.
This process takes longer than you think and for the soiled parts of my carpet I kept the machine hovering here the longest.
I made the mistake of not keeping an eye on the water tank though as it empties quickly. At one point I realised I was cleaning with an empty tank so had to go back over a huge area. The dirty tank did not need emptying while I used the machine, but I did have to fill the clean tank three times. My bottle of shampoo that came with the machine was depleting fast!
The general area of the carpet dried after use within half an hour. It seems to dry as it is being cleaned. I liked the results here as all the fibres were no longer laying down, but were stood up and it looked fresher.
The soiled area around the hallway took longer to dry and did look noticeably cleaner after use. The dirt seemed to lift off the carpet and it looked so much cleaner. It was not as clean as a brand new carpet, but it looked so much better than before and it was worth giving it a go with the machine.
The cat wee area wash where I had the most improvement as it really took the foul smell away, it looked like the rest of the carpet and I could certainly smell no cat wee after wards.
I was shocked to see the colour of dirty water in the tank. It was seeing this that spurred me on to go and buy my own machine!
I was so impressed at how quickly it dried and how easy it was to do. Right from the set up, I experienced hardly any hitches and I was really pleased with the results.
My only drawback is the price of the shampoo. A 1L bottle costs around £13.00! I would not advise using any other products than the ones recommended by VAX.
Summary: A really easy reliable machine
