      I purchased the Vax S2 Hard floor cleaner for approx £60 from Argos. However Argos are no longer selling the floor cleaner, instead it is available to buy from other well known online and high street stores such as from Amazon for £49, Tesco for £75, and from John Lewis for £49.99.

      ===========

      * Provides 20 minutes steam time so you refill less often

      * Ships in certified frustration-free packaging

      * Free 2 year UK Vax warranty for complete peace of mind

      ============
      The Design
      ============

      The Vax S2 steam floor cleaner has a modern looking design, with its white coloured finish and blue coloured frame to the body. It has a triangle shaped cleaning head that has the Vax name printed on the surface. It has a white coloured plastic handle that consists of a black coloured grip and the metal pole is adjustable to height. It has a blue coloured water tank and removable cleaning pads.

      ===========
      My Experience
      ===========

      I needed a hard floor steam cleaner for our kitchen floor tiles and the laminated flooring in our hall way, and when I saw it was priced reasonably and from a branded name such as Vax I decided it was the one for us!

      ~~~~~ Included In The Box ~~~~~
      It came well packaged along with a measuring jug for filling up the water tank, a carpet glider for refreshing carpets, and a microfiber cleaning pad along with an instructional manual.
      ~~~~~ Assembling ~~~~~

      It was easy to assemble and get using, the triangle floor cleaner head just needed to be screwed onto the lower body and done so with the screws provided. The handle also needs to be attached to the metal rail and to the body, along with the water tank which is very simple and straightforward to insert. The instruction manual was very easy to follow and main the assembling process very fast.

      ~~~~ Put To The Test ~~~~
      Once assembled I use the measuring jug to measure the water accurately and pour the water into the water tank attached to the body. Once the cleaner is plugged in and the power switched on I was surprised at how fast the appliance heated up and was ready to use, as it took only about a half a minute for the water tank to heat the water and the appliance ready for steam cleaning which is indicated by a red light display.
      The Vax steam floor cleaner is also very lightweight and therefore makes its so much easier to glide over the kitchen tiles and laminate flooring in our house. As our kitchen is a big size, using our old mop and bucket to clean the flooring used to take hours, and the constant dipping and draining off water in the bucket made it a tiring job. Thankfully this Vax cleaner manages to clean the kitchen flooring quickly and a lot easily, just simply glide over the flooring allowing the steam from the cleaner to polish the floors. If there is stubborn dirt or stains then there is a higher steam option that does wonders in such cases, and a very useful option to have available when needed.
      It has a good steam output, meaning quicker cleaning, but not too much steam that it over heats the room and steams up the windows! The higher steam settings obviously cleans flooring a lot quicker than the normal settings, but it also uses more water, therefore I only use it when there are those hard to remove muddy stains. Water tanks lasts approx 30 minutes and therefore doesn't need refilling in-between cleaning.
      ~~~~ Changing Cleaning Pads & Floor Drying Time ~~~~

      The pads can be changed easily depending on the flooring being cleaned, for example the carpet glider would have to be attached when using on carpet flooring. I find that the pads can be washed by hand and then reused reducing costs of repurchasing cleaning pads. I rarely use it on carpets and just stick to using it on hard flooring, so I can't really comment on the results on carpet. After use I find that the flooring dries considerably fast, almost within minutes of finishing, the flooring is fully dry.

      As it is lightweight and compact in size, it is very easy to move up and down the stairs when needed and it also to store away. The small triangle shaped cleaning head allows cleaning in tight corners and spaces and makes for a very versatile cleaning appliance.

      =========
      Conclusion
      ==========

      Overall I am very happy with this Vax steam cleaner, as it is simple to setup and use, and cleans flooring very well. It is also reasonably priced and therefore makes this Vax S2 Steam floor cleaner a recommended buy.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Good but not all its made out to be!

        I got this mop 3 months ago as my new semi detached house is hard floors throughout: Wooden floors throughout the halls and living/dining room and lino in the bathroom/kitchen.

        The mop heats up in a minute or so, and is ready to use in this time, very quick. I did not like the smooth white cover it comes with as it comes off too easily but I bought the blue 'long hair' mop cover which is much much better and doesn't come off. Both work well. It takes a little while for the steam to come through to the mop cover sometimes so i pump the steamer for a few minutes before using it.

        The floors dry within minutes and i have to admit they do feel extremely clean amongst your feet once done but my husband reckons thats just me 'thinking' they do haha!

        I do find it does take a few goes over to remove stubborn dirt (mud from shoes by the door) so i don't think it is all its made out to be!! but its a lot better than the traditional mop and bucket and a lot less messier!!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        A time saving appliance with a frustrating method of keeping the cleaning cloth in place

        I found it really difficult to keep my kitchen floor clean with three young children in the house, especially when my youngster was at the toddler stage. Using a mop and bucket meant allowing the floor time to dry which wasn't always achievable with the kids racing about and cleaning the kitchen floor was the last thing I want to do during the evening. A steam cleaner sounded like the answer to my prayers, particularly when I discovered this highly-rated Vax 'S2 Hard Floor Master' available at at a reasonably priced £44.99.

        I purchased the Vax S2 back in January of this year. The cleaner does require an element of assembly before the initial use but it was fairly minimal and simply a matter of attaching the handle to the main body and then connecting and screwing in the triangular base section. Once assembled, it is clear just how slim and compact this gadget actually is. I was envisioning something much bigger and bulkier but this is actually quite easy to store and to push, due to its slim proportions and lightweight sizing.

        The S2 does come with a very short and simple user manual but operating this is very straightforward and I only needed to refer to the manual for the initial use. The water tank is surprisingly small but this is quite misleading as the amount of water contained is more than enough to cover quite a large area. I find it easy to fill and empty the water tank before and after each use but can imagine this being a problem for people with poor grips or any joint issues as the tank has a series of indents at each size which need to be held firmly whilst sliding the tank upwards. The hole to top up with water is quite small but I find it large enough to hold under a tap without making too much mess. I use cold water to fill the tank and it is then heated by the cleaner itself, with a simple light system indicating when the correct temperature has been reached and the machine is ready to be used. The LED light is sensibly positioned so it easy to keep an eye on even whilst cleaning, which is especially useful as the temperature can fluctuate and the light will sometimes flick back to orange whilst the water is being re-heated sufficiently to generate enough steam.

        In use, some of the basics have been well thought out. I do appreciate the length of the cord which allows me to cover the length of my kitchen and also allows for the additional length needed to plug this in the landing and clean the bathroom floor thoroughly too. I also like the design of the triangular base as this is really well thought out to get right up to the edges of skirting boards and walls. The machine can also be utilised to 'freshen' carpets with the addition of a plastic cover which slots over the cloth. I haven't used this feature as, in all honesty, I fail to see what 'freshening' the carpet really means. It is certainly not claiming to 'clean' them and I would rather spend the same amount of time actually cleaning them with a proper carpet cleaner. If I didn't already own a carpet cleaner, I dare say I would give this feature a try but it isn't something that I can see many people benefiting from.

        Where this machine really falls down is on the design of the microfibre covers which attach to the base and do most of the cleaning work. I was disappointed that Vax only see fit to supply two covers, particularly given the full RRP of around £80. I can't imagine that the fairly thin fabric covers cost a great deal to produce so it seems more than a little mean just to provide two cloths although, of course, additional covers are available to buy at additional costs. My second (and primary) complaint is around the method used to hold the cloths in position. The microfibre cover has a tog system of tightening and should, in theory, sit securely over the triangular base. I find it relatively easy to attach the cloths using the pull string and plastic toggle but I find it much harder to keep them in position. In order to push the cleaner and to clean the floor effectively, I need to push down and the motion simply loosens the cover completely. Reattaching the soaking wet, but boiling hot, cover then becomes a major issue and I need to wait several minutes for both the base and the cloth to become cool enough to safely handle and reattach. The frustration then starts as the whole process begins again. I do try and be quite gentle when pushing but find that the cover inevitably pops off just with the pressure needed to clean properly. My husband has no patience whatsoever with this system and has reverted back to the old-fashioned mop and bucket.

        I do find that the cleaner is easier to use in the bathroom, where it is pushed along a shinier (linoleum style) floor covering. I find that it is easier to push and as less pressure is needed I don't experience the cover becoming loose with the same frequency (although it will still happen.) My kitchen floor is covered with very hard, old fashioned floor tiles (rather than shiny modern ceramic tiles.) It is also a pale colour so I find that dirt and stains are really visible. This Vax does make a marked difference to the appearance of the floor and the covers are absolutely filthy after use, even when used on what appears to be a relatively 'clean' floor. The finished results are not, however, as amazing as I'd hoped, certainly based on reading about other people's experiences with this particular model. Some people had claimed that this steam cleaner had been able to remove stains and marks that had been years old but I don't find that this tackles anything ingrained. The floor is certainly cleaned but I don't particularly feel that it cleans any better than a traditional mop and bucket.

        The advantage of this system, however, is that the cleaning power of steam rather than water is much quicker. The machine heats the water up within a couple of minutes, if that, and it is good to go. I find that the tank is enough for a whole room so I don't need to mess about refilling part way through cleaning. The main advantage is that the floor is not actually wet after use. The steam evaporates practically instantly so the kitchen is pretty much free to use straight after cleaning which is great for busy families. I can even use this in the bathroom whilst the boys are in the bath. It is incredibly quick to use and I just zip up and down whilst they play and I can be confident that the floor will be completely safe and dry by the time they are ready to get out.

        This is also very inexpensive to run. Aside from the small cost of the electricity involved, this cleans without the need for any additional chemicals or other cleaning aids. In fact, Vax specifically advise not using any cleaning products in conjunction with this model. This is a real consideration in terms of money saving and from an environmentally friendly perspective too. The high temperatures involve will kill germs and bacteria so I can be confident that the floor is left hygienically clean without having to resort to bleach or anti-bacterial products at extra cost.

        I love any gadget that can help me to use my time more efficiently and this certainly does that, aside from the main frustration with the microfibre covers and their poor fastening system. The S2 is currently available from Amazon for £49.99. It's not a bad price for this kind of appliance but I don't think it is the best of the models available so it may well be worth paying more to get a better appliance. Having said that, I much prefer the convenience and cost effectiveness of using this steam cleaner when compared to a mop and bucket. I am happy to recommend the S2 on that basis, although I do think there is considerable room for improvement with the microfibre cloth system.

          Overall, a fantastic and hygenic way of cleaning your wooden/laminate flooring.

          With a toddler who often likes to roam round the house with sticky food and a cat that likes to run in the house after being out in the muddy garden, I was looking for a quick, simple and hygienic solution to clean the floors. This seemed to fit the bill perfectly and was on offer with an amazing discount so it seemed like a no brainer!

          Upon purchasing the steamer, I read that it couldn't be used on laminate flooring which I was a bit gutted about. Upon further investigation, it seemed you could. I usually used a bucket a mop which (in hindsight) omitted a lot more water than the steamer, so not sure why the warning was suggested on the product page.

          When the steamer arrived, I was amazed at how lightweight it was. In the box, you also get two microfiber covers and a triangular plastic cover which enables you to refresh carpets.

          The steamer itself was really easy to set up. You literally fill up the water tank, fit the microfiber cover and off you go! The steamer doesn't leave your floors feeling really wet, just nice and clean! You can feel the heat on the floor which gives you reassurance that its cleaning effectively. It has a button behind the handle which omits steam to help with stubborn stains.

          I've tried the steamer on my carpet before. It does freshen it up, but by no means can it be used as a carpet cleaner.

          I would highly recommend this steamer, especially for people with kids and/or pets.

          great product

          The whole of the downstairs in my house is laminate floor and I was so sick and tired of constantly getting the mop and bucket out that I decided to treat myself and get a steam mop (lucky me) I have 3 kids and a dog so my floors never stay clean for more than a couple of hours and I hate the look of dirty floors and the fact they have germs all over them so was keen to try something different.

          I researched the various different mops on line and decided on this one. I got it online for £70 so quite expensive for a mop but I had read good things about it so thought id give it a go.

          When the mop arrived I was very excited to try it out (sad I know but true!). My husband set it up and said that it was very easy to do. The mop section simply screws to the main section. The mop comes with 2 cleaning heads and these can be put in the washer which I thought was great.

          After reading the instructions I found that It was simple to use I just had to fill the tank section with water and then wait a few minutes until a light came on. When it did I was ready to go!

          I think the thing that I liked best about this compared to a standard bucket and mop was that the floor dried very quickly. Normally I have to keep the kids out of the rooms I have mopped for ages afterwards so that they don't slip on the wet but with this it was dry almost straight away.

          I think that the mop really does an excellent job. The amount of dirt that was on the cloths was surprising. The cloths area great as they can just be put in the washer. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with wooden or tiled floors and also anyone with kids and dogs I think you will be surprised with the amount of dirt you get from your floors!

            A great way to ensure your floors are cleaned to perfection without the need for chemicals

            I had been thinking about getting a steam mop for some time but was unsure which brand to go for. I knew that Vax was a front runner in the cleaning equipment stakes so after reviewing several models I decided on the Vax S2. What a wise choice I made! I love everything about it and it is so easy to use. It took minutes to assemble and it heated up so quickly that in no time at all, from taking it from the box, it was ready to go. You get a measuring jug with it so adding the water to the tank is a synch. The microfibre covers which go over the mop head attach easily but make sure you have secured them properly with the draw strings as the first time, in my eagerness to start mopping, I did not and the cover came off half way into proceedings. The first floor I attacked was my kitchen which is vinyl twin flooring. Just a press on the button and steam is released as and when you need it. What I liked most was that the mop glided over the surface very smoothly and the floor dried very quickly. Cleaning time in comparison to standard mopping was dramatically cut too and the floor felt really clean with no residue or stickiness. I quickly moved on to the bathroom which has a tiled floor and again I was delighted by the finished result. Not only did I feel my floors were spotlessly clean but also that any bacteria and germs had been eradicated too. The great thing is that absolutely no chemicals are required - you are just cleaning with steam and saving a fortune on various cleaning products. From a small amount of water in the tank you get an amazingly good amount of steam. I timed mine lasting a good 18 minutes which I felt was very good for a first go taking into account familiarising myself with the product. Along with the steam mop itself, the measuring jug and 2 microfibre covers, a carpet glider is supplied. The idea is that whilst not "cleaning" your carpets the mop can refresh them and I found this to be very true. Armed with a fresh tank of water I set about the lounge and dining room and was amazed how much better the carpets looked when I had finished. They smelled fresher and the pile was raised giving them a new lease of life. By the time I had finished testing out the S2 I was extremely pleased with my purchase. It is sturdy and well made but not at all cumbersome. It is light to carry and move around but it has a quality build. The instructions are easy to follow and for ease of use I cannot praise it high enough. The microfibre covers just go straight into the washing machine for cleaning and more of the same and other variants can be easily purchased. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Vax S2 Steam Mop - I just wish I had bought one sooner!

              Highly reliable steam cleaning mop, easy to use with great results.

              I first thought about purchasing a steam mop when we got a pet dog 4 months ago.

              After researching steam mops, I was aware that Vax was a well known brand and in the past members of my family had bought the traditional Vax carpet cleaner. I was able to purchase one and the price of this is extremely reasonable.

              It's has an appealing appearance and is very light when you carry it around. Easy to operate and simple to remove and refill the water holder.

              Great satisfaction gained when I was cleaning the tiled floors in the kitchen and bathroom, leaving them fresh and clean and not too wet afterwards. No detergent needed either! The triangular shape of the head means it can get around edges and corners with no fuss, and it rotates too.

              This model also came with a carpet glider which is for refreshing carpets. It doesn't clean them like a carpet shampooer does, but it certainly refreshed it by picking up odours and dirt and grime from the fibres. You simply sit the steam mop onto the triangular glider, and glide it around as normal, releasing the steam at whatever rate you need.

              It does not leave the carpet 'too' wet, so you don't have to leave it for long before its dried.
              The removable cleaning pads for the steam mop are very easy to fit and remove to wash after using.

              It is very slim so is easy to store and would fit into any small space or corner.

              If you are thinking of purchasing a steam mop, I would stay this one ticks all the boxes. Great quality product.

              Bought this product around 10 months ago and when it works it is ok. The back tank clip broke within a month and we had to use with it sellotaped to main unit. In addition to this we've had the unit replaced twice, first because the element went and now more recently because the internal water nozzle split. Vax are now telling me they cannot replace because I took the front unit off as per their instructions and the manual. I am in the process of escalating to their Customer Services Manager. I bought from Comet otherwise I would take back to the retailer for a refund. This product is very badly made and the customer service is even worse!!!I bought a carpet cleaner from Vax a few years before which is great but I would never buy another VAX product again!!!

              a great gadget for all your cleaning needs

              As i only have two carpet rooms, i decided i was fed up having to mop every few days and it leaving the floor still dirty and very wet.
              I saw a advert on the tv for a different stream mop, and decided i needed one of these in my life, so after alot of looking and researching i decided on the Vax S2 Hard Floor Master.
              I purchased it from amazon for about £50 and it came within a few days. I was so excited and couldn't wait to try it.
              included is the:

              The S2 Cleaner
              2 cleaning pads
              measuring jug
              carpet glider
              instruction manual
              guarantee card

              Setting it up was easy, you have to screw a few pieces together (took about 10-15 mins) and weyhey all set to go. The stream cleaner heats up in less than a minute.
              The water tank is 0.5 litres which gives you 15-20 minutes depending on how much stream you use.
              Using the stream mop is very simple, at first the cleaning pads kepted falling off, so i stream them up now before i start mopping and haven't had this problem since.
              I found the mop very easy to glide through the rooms, the cord is about 5 meters long so you are able to go from room to room without unplugging.
              After the first use my floors came up gleaming, just what i needed especially with a two year old to tidy up after.
              There was no wetness and slippy floors, the floor was dry within a minute which i was very impressive with. After use looking at the pads i was shocked at the amount of dirt on them, but a quick was in the washing machine and they come up looking like new again.

              I have only used the carpet glider once and it made my carpet look really refreshed and quite new looking again, i will be using this again when i feel my carpets need it.

              If you are debating if to buy one i would say go for it

              Many thanks for reading

                Disadvantages

                Brilliant product

                Most of the floors in my house are covered in either laminate flooring or tiles, in fact it is only the landing area that actually has a carpet in it. I have often toyed with the idea of getting a steam mop, after spending ages using a mop and bucket to go over the floor, I thought there must be something more simpler to use.

                After looking at several online reviews, I decided that the Vax S2 Hard Floor Steam Cleaner was the one that suited me. Most of the reviews were positive and it was failry priced at £64.99 at Curry's so I decided to treat myself.

                Setting up the cleaner is simple to do, you need to attatch the 'floor' bit to the main body with the screws provided and also the long handle to the main body. The water tank simply 'clicks' onto the relevent area. You are also given two cleaning pads to use.

                The first thing to strike me after setting it up was just how light it was. I was expecting it to be quite heavy but it's perfect and ideal if you need to carry it upstairs. Operating the cleaner is also very simple. You simply fill the water in the tank and leaving for several seconds, once the red light comes it, that means that you can now use it to steam your floors.

                First time that I used it I had a 'Is this actually working' thought. The red light came on and as I started cleaning the floor there didn't seem to be any steam coming out of it, nor did the floors look like they were 'wet'. Thankfully, it did take an extra while longer than when the light came on for it to really kick in.

                Another good thing about this product is that the floor dries within seconds. When I used to mop the floor with water it would take ages to get the floors dry. The cleaning cloths also show how much dirt has been removed from the floor. I was suprised, I mopped my floors every day but it still picked up an incredible amount of dirt on the cleaning cloths.

                Overall, it is definitly something I would recommend. It is very thorough with the cleaning and feels good knowing that my floors have had a good clean. The only downside I have about the product is that two cleaning cloths are not enough. I think you need a cloth per room for this product and it picks up an incredible amount of dirt (I don't have a mucky house). The cloths are machine washable but are quite expensive to buy seperatly.

                I really recommend this

                Having had my VAX S2 hard floor master for about seven months or longer now, I feel able to give a fairly good overall picture of this steam cleaner and how it performs. I had wanted a steam cleaner for quite a while and I had been watching the QVC channel where they had been advertising them all the time, and kept on mentioning to my husband how great they looked. There seemed, however, there seemed to be quite a few different models on the market and I wasn't sure which one was the was option for me. After trawling the Internet for ages I finally found the one I thought would be the best - the Vax S2 model.

                They were selling these in B&Q for £72 and I almost bought it when right at the last minute I found they were selling them in B&M Superstores for £67. As it was a saving of £5 I opted for B&M - obviously. I was so excited about getting the steam cleaner I was telling everyone at work about and received some rather pitying looks from colleagues who obviously thought I should 'get out more'.

                It came in a long thin box and my hubby put it together for me in next to no time whilst I made a cuppa and sat down to read the instructions. The box looked bulky but the actual steam cleaner is quite long and slender looking and I knew it wasn't going to take up mach space underneath my kitchen cupboard (where I also keep an assortment of other household objects, including my vacuum cleaner and ironing board, etc).

                When I first held the cleaner it felt a little flimsy and plastic, if I'm honest, but I decided I really needed to try it out before I could judge it properly. The handle comes up to just above my waist (I'm 5'8") and you have to step on the left of the base to get the handle to lean right back. The water tank is situated right at the front of the cleaner and it holds 0.5 litres and it's completely transparent so you can see exactly how much water there is left inside as you go about cleaning the floors.

                We have different sorts of floors in our home (lino in the kitchen, tiles in the upstairs and downstairs loos), hard wood flooring in the hallway and porch, and laminate floor in all the bedrooms and the conservatory. We bought this particular model as it was advertised as being suitable for all sorts of floor types (including marble!!) and we thought it was the ideal choice for this reason. I hate cleaning the kitchen and other hardwood floors in our house, it's a real chore and it can take me ages boiling kettles and mopping them over, not to mention how long they take to dry. So, we also bought this thinking that it would save me loads of time.

                The cleaner also came with two blue triangular shaped floor 'cloths', which tie onto the base of the cleaner. These can be washed at up to 40 degrees in a washing machine and are obviously able to be reused time and time again. They can also be bought individually for this particular model of machine. The cleaner also comes with a grey triangular shaped base for standing it on whilst it's heating up and cooling down.

                My husband filled the water tank as instructed and then I plugged it in. There are two little buttons right at the front of the machine. One lights up as soon as it's connected to the electricity supply and the other one lights up as green as soon as the water has heated up to a sufficient level. It takes less than a minute until the light turns green - at least that's what was supposed to happen.

                The light on my machine turned green instantly - just as soon as I plugged it into the socket. I immediately knew that there was something wrong as the instructions state that it takes around 30 to 60 seconds to heat up. I immediately told my husband and he told me just to use it anyway and see what happened.

                I depressed the base, pulled the handle towards me, pressed the small trigger to release the steam and then proceeded to navigate it around my kitchen floor. It made a 'steamy' sort of noise but it left long watermarks and streaks all over the place. When I bent down to feel the floor, I could feel that the water was cold and hadn't heated up at all. We rang the 'VAX' help line and they advised us to return it to the store.

                To cut a long story short, we received a replacement model and this time it DID take the estimated 30-60 seconds for the green light to appear. I find using this steam cleaner so simple and easy, not to mention quick. It glides easily round the floor and also around corners, as the base has a kind of 'swivel head' and it also allows me to clean right up to the edge of the room, which means that no floor space gets missed out.

                The only problem I do find is in the upstairs bathroom, where I cannot manage to push the cleaner right up the sides of the toilet as it's too large and the space is too small. I always make sure I've vacuumed or 'Swiffed' the floors with my 'Swiffer' broom before I start to use the steamer, as obviously it doesn't pick up debris, it simply cleans. It's so lightweight to use and there is no pulling or pushing a heavy machine around the floor, like I do with a normal vacuum cleaner. The cord is also really long and it stretches from one end of the room to the other. The cord isn't retractable, however, it has to be manually coiled up and placed on the back of the machine.

                I really cannot stress enough what a massive difference this cleaner has made in terms of saving time and energy in cleaning the floors in my house. It's unbelievable how quickly I can just clean a room, and what's more, the drying time is incredibly quick as the machine uses steam, rather than water to clean the floor. As we have pets, it's been an absolute Godsend, especially at this time of the year when they come into the house and tread wet paw prints everywhere. I just whip out the Vax and it's clean and dry in no time at all.

                I do think the best results have been in the bedrooms (which all have laminate floors). I've even found it's managed to pick up some stains. I press down on the handle to release the steam and leave it over the stain for about thirty seconds and it seem to 'lift' the mark out of the laminate.

                It's been the best £67 I've spent in a long time and if you are thinking about shelling out for any kind of steam cleaner, I'd totally recommend the VAX S2 model. It's perfect, very reasonably priced and I'd happily recommend it to anyone.

                  a fab steam mop which cleans very well and has good steam capacity

                  I hate mopping floors but the entire downstairs of our house is hard flooring so needs must ... I had previously bought numerous different (non-steam) mops to try to make the task easier/quicker/less hateful but to no avail.

                  A few months ago I decided to try a steam mop. I did my homework by looking at lots of reviews online as it soon became obvious that not all steam mops are the same! In the end I decided upon the vax s2 and bought one about 3 months ago from an online cash and carry for £40.

                  Well? I _love_it :-) I no longer hate mopping floors! The Vax S2 is a sturdy, well-made steam mop with a decent sized water compartment (500ml). The handle is reasonably long - fine for me at 5ft 10" but I think if I were any taller, I might get a bit of a bad back using it. The instructions say that a tank of water lasts for 15 minutes, but that is if you keep the steam trigger continually depressed, which generally you don't need to so I find it lasts for a much longer period.

                  It can be used on carpets as well as hard flooring but be warned, the S2 is only designed for "freshening" carpets i.e. won't remove heavy duty stains.

                  Accessories: comes with 2 microfibre mop pads, measuring jug and carpet glider which allows you to use it on carpets as well as hard flooring.

                  All in all, I find this a great product which is fabulous on hard flooring and good at giving carpets a light clean. I have invested in some "coral pads" to replace the microfibre cleaning pads as these provide even better cleaning power and to be honest, the microfibre pads are a bit flimsy and easily damaged. The coral pads have lots of little "fingers" (like coral) and these clean the gaps between tiles better than the microfibre pads. I bought them cheaply from a well-known auction site.

                  Disadvantages? There are only 2:
                  1) the power cord does not retract inside the steam mop - you manually wrap the cord around 2 hooks on the unit.
                  2) there is a filter in the mop which periodically needs replacing. I haven't had to do this yet but am worried they might be expensive when they need replacing. To try to make the filter last longer, I am using de-ionised water in the unit but don't know how much difference it will make!

                  Disadvantages

                  I will give it 5 stars although will come back to alter if I use it on the carpets and am not happy

                  I have to say that although this is a good little machine, I am still not too sure why I bought it. I am always looking for ways to cut down the housework, but here there really is not a lot that I can do with the steam mop. We only have a small kitchen and a small area in the extension that has tiles and lino but I saw it was reduced and decided that it was going to be a bargain. At £50 it seems like a good investment for the future.

                  I have not used it on the carpets as yet, because they are fairly new and I am concerned I may not use it properly and ruin them. There is a separate attachment for carpets and it is just a matter of switching the 2 pieces over.

                  There are advantages as the pole is long and I am not bent double when mopping and it does not take up much room. It only takes a couple of seconds - certainly less than half a minute - for the water to heat up and once it does it can take up some well established marks. Once this had been done however I felt that the mop had done its job and was not cleaning much more than an ordinary mop did. When I first used it I made use of the extra steam option and it did heat up more and remove the stains. The tiles seem dry very quickly so I don't have to put paper down at all.

                  If I eventually use it to its full potential it will have been a good buy as it could be used throughout the house. It seems to be safe as regardless of how long I leave it on - I have been known to answer the phone and forget to switch it off - it does not overheat. I am always convinced that the floor is perfectly clean when I have used the machine.

                  Apart from the first time I used it the cloths have not been too dirty so I have been able to wash them and then put them back on. I have nothing bad to say about this with regards to the way I have used it.

                  For the technical side, the cleaner is 29 x 23 x 122 cm and weighs 3 Kg so is easy to move around and does not take up a lot of room when it is put away. It moves easily across the floor and the water tank lasts for 20 minutes and I have never had to refill during use. As it is so small and compact it can still get into some of the small areas that a basic mop can.

                  There is an instruction manual with it and it was easy to set up the first time I used it. It comes with a 2 year guarantee however I am sure that I am not going to need it.

                    Advantages

                    Disadvantages

                    A cleaner which makes my floors sparkle

                    When we bought our house we only had one area of hard flooring which was in the kitchen and this was quickly removed and replaced as the old owners were not concerned that they had rather stained and holey vinyl. Being a person who has always thought that carpet was not the most hygienic of flooring in the bathroom, this too since been ripped out and replaced with vinyl floor tiles which make cleaning that little bit easier. I did for a number of months resort to cleaning both floors with a mop and bucket of water however, since seeing a number of adverts for upright steam cleaners I bought myself one to both make my house more hygienic and also to save my back from constantly bending over.

                    ==The Vax S2 Hard Floor Master==

                    The Vax S2 Floor Master is a prime example of a slim and light way of cleaning. Vax are, in my opinion one of the better brands for producing good quality floor cleaners and it was with this thought that I bought mine. This product is very simply designed in a rather clean design using a white body with blue trim and is very slim line in size, the measurements of which are 29cm x 23cm x 122cm.

                    Put quite simply this product is rather similar in principal to that of an iron being that it has a tank with which to fill the product up with water and a filament to heat the water to steam which can then be utilised to clean both hard floors and carpet finishes without leaving them wet to the touch as they would be with water.

                    ==What It Cleans==

                    When reading through the instruction manual this product is designed to clean hard floors but can also be used to refresh' carpets. It can be used to clean laminate, sealed wood, tile and lino floor finishes and does not require any cleaning solution as the heat of the steam kills bacteria.

                    ==Cleaning Power==

                    This cleaner uses only steam and due to the heat it kills both bacteria and dust mites meaning that it suits both kitchen and bathroom environments. Whilst it might be questioned how good steam really is as a cleaner on its own I can testify that it produces a smear free finish to my tiles and the steam lifts off dried on food and dirt without any effort. Due to the properties of the steam it is not necessary to buy any cleaning products for use with this machine however I do like to add a drop of ironing water to mine to leave the floors smelling fresh rather than not smelling of anything at all.

                    ==Price and Availability==

                    This machine is in my opinion quite an investment however it is worth it considering the savings on both floor cleaning products, time and the fact that it comes with a 2 year guarantee. I bought mine from a local electrical store and paid around £90 for it in the sale. However a quick look online reveals it can currently be ought for anywhere between £89.99 on Amazon to £115 at Littlewoods.

                    ==Assembly==

                    The product comes packaged in a slim box which upon opening has a number of bits inside, a good example of one of those purchases where you pour the contents on to the floor and try and fathom how they work together. However it should be said that you get 7 pieces in all which are as follows:-

                    - The S2 Cleaner
                    - Two cleaning pads
                    - Measuring jug
                    - Carpet 'glider'
                    - Instruction manual
                    - Guarantee card

                    The central body of the cleaner is mainly white in colour and is highlighted in blue plastic trim around the front and tank of the machine. The head section is 'angle' shaped or as I put more simply a triangle and this can be screwed to the main body with a screwdriver. The machine also has a handle with a trigger attached which again requires attaching to the body.

                    Upon assembling the machine it is necessary to add the cleaning pads which can simply be slid onto the triangular base and tightened using the drawstring. These machine pads are cleverly designed to enable them to be washed in the washing machine or by hand after use and therefore save the money of having to buy new ones.

                    When everything is ready to go simply plug the machine into the nearest socket and fill up with the measuring jug. Then simply wait for the green light to come on which usually takes a couple of minutes and you are ready to go. And after, it can easily fit inside a narrow space or cupboard so that it is completely out os sight out of mind and therefore does not take up valuable space.

                    ==Use==

                    This machine is both easy and lightweight to use. It clean by simply running the head of the machine over the floor and intermittently pushing down the trigger handle to release jest of steam. For tougher stains I tend to just apply a couple of bouts of steam and this usually removes the offending dirt.

                    This machine is great for people with mobility issues or who just have as I do a slightly tender back as you simply have to stand up to push the cleaner around the room without any scrubbing involved plus the 1.2m height means that it suits the majority of people. It also comes with quite a long cord meaning that you can move it to the next room without needing to unplug it.

                    The angular head means that this cleaner can easily be manoeuvred around your sink and toilet bases to really clean behind your sanitary ware without getting any dirt on your hands plus I have found that the 0.5 litre tank gives me around 15 minutes of cleaning time. This can go up to 20 minutes depending on how trigger happy you are with the steam.

                    ==Results==

                    I have been really pleased with my steam cleaner as it has been an easy way to remove stains whilst also making my floors hygienic. It is very easy to use and it has made my floors sparkly clean to look at with minimum effort. Another bonus is that the floors are not wet after cleaning and are therefore safe to walk on without leaving a trail of footprints or slipping over.

                    I would thoroughly recommend this cleaner to any like minded cleaning enthusiasts or those who simply have pets and like to keep their house free from any nasty bacteria.

                    Fives stars out of five from me.

                    Thanks for reading! x

                      Disadvantages

                      A steam mop that is really quick to set up and use

                      In my house I have a combination of different floor coverings, from varnished real wooden floors in two of the bedrooms and then lino in the kitchen and tiles in the bathroom. Mopping up is such a chore and it never felt truly clean so we bought one of the steam mops to make the process easier and make the floors cleaner. After mopping with a conventional mop the floors just seemed quite dull and I felt like I was just smearing water everywhere rather than making them hygienic and sanitised. A steam cleaner cleans with very high temperatures which should kill most bacteria and leave floors shiny and very clean.

                      ==Price and availability==

                      The steam Vax S2 mop can be bought from electrical stores or online for £70.00. For this price it comes with everything you need.

                      ==Description==

                      The steam cleaner is tall with a slim handle and has a large angled base that produces the steam at the bottom. It is really slim to store away neatly but it is quite heavy. It feels much heavier than it looks, especially when full of water. I was a bit disappointed when I first used it as I expected it to be light and easy to manoeuvre however it is a little more cumbersome that I anticipated. The whole unit without water weighs 3KG. The tank has a capacity of 0.5L and can be removed and filled up at the tap. The tank slots inside the machine with a click. There is a handle at the top with a trigger for you to push and control the steam and a long (6m) flex cord to reach the nearest plug socket.

                      ==Set up==
                      In the box:
                      * 1 × Vax S2
                      * 2 × Mircofibre cleaning pad
                      * 1 × Carpet glider
                      * 1 × Measuring jug
                      * 1 × Guarantee
                      * 1 × Instruction manual

                      When you first open the box containing your new machine you will need to screw the handle and mop base on to the main body. The screws are all there in the box and all you need is a screwdriver.
                      To set the machine up you will first need to pop one of the mop heads on the base of the machine. These need removing after use and can be washed in the washing machine and then hung out to dry. The mop comes with two white smooth floor mop heads but you can purchase the blue long tassel heads. I have not bought anything extra such as these as I am quite happy with the performance of these pads alone. The mop head pads have a draw strong cover and fasten around the base. It is worth splashing a little bit of water on this before you fasten them on as it softens them up and it makes the steam come out a little easier. As long as you get them on right in the first place they will not come off while you are using the machine so it worth double checking their security. To fill the tank, unclip from the machine and take to the tap to fill up or use the little jug provided in the box. You can add a detergent to the water to make the floors and steam smell nice or you can use water alone. This is my recommendation though as the instructions said you should only use water in it! I use a couple of capfuls of a pledge wooden floor cleaner as it smells really nice and leaves the floors streak free and shiny but without being slippy. Products such as this can be found easily in the supermarket with the furniture polish. It states that anything else other than water can cause damage but I have never had a problem with it.
                      Once the tank is filled (you will get about 15-20 minutes of steam time so if you do not need this long then put less water on. It will make it easier to manoeuvre and saves a little bit of water wastage.) Next plug the machine in to the electrical mains and then turn the machine on. There is a light indicator that will tell you when the machine is ready to use. This light will usually turn green within and minute and then you are free to use the machine. To use it, gently pull the handle towards you and place a foot on the base, this angles the handle at a comfortable angle to use it. Next, pull the trigger and push across the floor using long strokes, slowly and backwards across the floor. Afterwards all you need to do is empty the excess water from the tank and remove the mop head. This will now need washing and leaving out to dry.

                      ==Results==

                      You do get quite a good length of time out of the steam although the first couple of times using it I spent far too long trying to get the floors extra sparkly clean and needed to refill it midsession. I now have it down to a tee and can do the whole set of rooms on one tank. I first use the mop on the kitchen lino which really does need it, it is quite light coloured and when our shoes are wet we often leave dirty marks on the floor by the door. The mop makes fast work of these and cleans the patch by the door back to perfect condition. It is important to give the floors a bit f a sweep first otherwise you will find yourself constantly needing to wring out the floor pad as it becomes congested and stuck up with dust and things. I do not like the idea of spreading the dust and hair around so a good sweep up is definitely important to do. The lino dries streak free and it does dry really quickly due to the heat. There really is hardly any water left on the floor after use. The design of the mop head is supposed to assist you getting into awkward corners as it is angled rather than circular. Unfortunately this is not as helpful as you may think and it doesn't quite get into all the corners; I need to do these with a hand cloth. I think if I had the mop head with the long tassels it would probably help in the corners more. I really found the kitchen lino hard to clean with a normal mop as it still seemed to hold on to dirty marks like the lino was stained. The steam cleaner lifts all marks off with ease and for that reason the lino looks in really good condition and in fact quite new looking. After doing the kitchen floor I move onto the bathroom so I have to lift the machine up the stairs and plug it in up there.

                      On the tiles in the bathroom the mop makes them look very clean and keeps the grout fresh looking. I find the mop quite awkward to push round the toilet and the sink in here so I only tend to give it a quick going over; I tend to just do the small patch around the doorway and the shower and finish the rest off by hand.

                      The wooden floors are my favourite to clean as there are less obstacles to navigate around and they come up really well. They are hardwood varnished floors and I can tell they need a good clean as they start looking dull and dusty. After a good sweep up, the mop gives the floors that extra bit of sparkle and makes sure they are completely free of dust, stains and marks. They dry quickly and without streaks. Using the lemony detergent (despite the instructions forbidding this) makes the whole house smell delicious and clean. I normally change the beds and mop the floors on the same day. I love my house after doing this as it just smells so wonderful.

                      I wouldn't say that the steam mop does amazing things to floors, if it is old and shabby lino it will always be old shabby lino and it certainly isn't going to make your wooden floors sparkle if they have never had a sparkle but they do make mopping a lot easier and using the steam cleaning makes the floors much more hygienic.

                      There is also a carpet tool for the steam cleaner so you can 'freshen' up your rugs and small areas of carpet. I have not used this tool as I'm not overly convinced it is powerful enough to clean carpet, I would rather use a more professional wet vacuum rather than this little mop!

                      Things to note:
                      Spare microfibre cloth pads can be bought for £4.99 and the blue long tasselled mop head costs £7.99.

                      ==Overall==

                      I have had friends over who think a steam mop is completely unnecessary, one friend even said it was too much bother having to get it out the cupboard and fill it up etc. However in my opinion filling a bucket and having to wring it out every five minutes and lug the bucket of water round with you is much harder work! I really like the machine and there are far more advantages that disadvantages to having one. If I had to really pick fault with the machine the only gripe I can see is that the steam cleaner is not suitable for laminate flooring. I do not have any laminate flooring and to be honest I am not sure why you couldn't use it on the floors. I think it is probably because laminate could swell and buckle under the steam pressure due to being made from MDF material. I think most laminates these days would be a little bit more robust however the manufactures still need to cover their backs just in case something goes wrong.

                      So to finish off, this is an excellent option as a steam mop and I would wholly recommend it.
