I have been in the market for a new vacuum cleaner for a while and when you have a dog that molts as much as my dog does, its not an easy decision to make because I have been getting along with a couple of vacuum cleaners all which have been marketed as vacuum cleaners that are great for picking up pet hair, however I have found with all of them they have been rubbish. Hoovering up with the cleaners that I had started to become a tedious job, even though they had on board turbo brushes it still became a pain and what should take not long to do was becoming a chore of a hour to get the job done properly and when doing this on a daily basis, you can imagine how annoying it got.

Scouting through the Argos catalogue and also having a lot of advice from one of our guides on dooyoo (thanks for all your help), I finally made a decision to go for the Vax Essentials VEU-02 for Pets. I was looking for something basically that would do the job, however be pretty costs effective too, and at £69.99 from Argos, I thought I would give this model a whirl.

I have never owned a Vax before however have always considered them a reputable brand when it comes to this sort of product. I was really hoping that it lived up to my expectations when I got it home for the first time.

I have always gone for cylinder cleaners, however on this occasion I have chose an upright cleaner, I find with upright your skirting boards don't get as damaged as when you are using a cylinder the knock everything and you find yourself touching your skirting boards up all the time because you have knocked the paint off.

When picking the cleaner up I was a little apprehensive as to how heavy it was going to be. To be honest I had had a little spending spree in Argos, paid for everything and then started to worry when I had to collect them as to whether I was going to be able to carry everything to the car. I was pleasantly surprised when I asked the customer service person how heavy it was and he said it was pretty light. Packaged in a large box, it did look heavy, however when I picked it up and managed to pick up the rest of my bags I was already to a certain extent happy with my purchase purely because of the weight of it, as I know how you can struggle carrying upright cleaners up the stairs. The cleaner itself is very light which is great and taking it from one room to another whether it be upstairs or downstairs, is not a problem at all, and I don;t find myself putting my back out.

Its actually a quite good looking hoover as well, not to the extent of a Dyson, however some of those I think look hideous with the colour combinations that they have on them. The Vax is grey in colour with clear compartment which collects all the dirt. Its a bagless hoover so a lot more cost effective as you don't have to purchase bags for it, however I have found with a dogs that molts so much, it doesn't hold a great capacity and find myself having to empty it very often, although it does itself hold 2 litres.

For picking up pet hair it has an onboard turbo tool, which is one of the main reason why I purchased it, however much to my satisfaction I have never had to use this tool because the vacuum cleaner itself is absolutely fantastic. The cleaner itself is 1500 watts which is no different to the wattage of other cleaners that I have had, however I hink where I have been going wrong is choosing cylinder cleaners and not upright. The suction of the cleaner is fantastic, all I have to do is whizz it round and it picks up all of Sandy hairs that get embedded into the carpet, with no problems at all, which makes hoovering these days not a chore but a pleasure to do with this vacuum cleaner. I can do the whole house in the space of time that it used to take me to do one room and not even have to use the turbo tool.

I find the cord to the cleaner a little short in my house and struggle to stretch coverage over one room. The cord itself is 6 metres, which is quite long, however I do have quite large rooms so find myself moving it from socket to socket.

The cleaner has HEPA Filtration and anti-bacterial filtration which is great if you are a pet owner.

Although I have a few minor problems with the cleaner including the length of the cord and capacity of how much dirt it collects, the performance of the actual cleaner doesn't make you think about these problems bacuse it does such a good job. I have never been happier with another model and would certainly recommend this to any pet owner that find hoovering up after their pet a task rather than a pleasure. Fantastic.

Now you know why Vax have brought out a range called "Essentials." An Essential piece of kit and a good all round review. Doesn't this model have a light though and whats the noise like?
