Advantages: light wieght and low price.
Disadvantages: It keeps hitting me.
Last year on Christmas eve my much loved but very abused vax upright vacuum cleaner finally conked out. As I am a bit of a vacuuming addict I decided I would not be able to make it through Christmas without a new vacum cleaner. The thought of all those little sparkly bits on the carpet for days on end was horrifying. So I popped open the laptop and did a bit of research, I had already decided to have another Vax so it was just a matter of finding one at the right price in a shop that was open at 4.30 Christmas Eve.
What I came across was the Vax Mach 3 VZL-6013 in comet for around £80, Brilliant. I grabbed Mr H and off we went.
When we got home I promptly unpacked my new arrival and proceeded to put the Kettle on while Mr H attached the handle and pulled all the card and plastic off the vacuum cleaner. To attach the handle you need to connect two leads that run up through the handle and then slot the handle on.
The vacuum cleaner was then handed back to me to test drive. After scouting around a bit I discovered the power button on top of the handle. A very convenient place as I do suck things up the vacuum cleaner by mistake and the position of the button enables quick turning off to retrieve the lost item. The vacuum cleaner is very quiet and I am able to talk over the top of it without doing silly hand gestures to make myself understood.
The vacuum cleaner has 5 different height settings which are good for a variety of different floor surfaces. I use 5 on the very thick rug in my dining room and 2 on the Axminster carpet in the lounge and 1 on the tiles in the hall and kitchen. The sucking power of the vacuum cleaner is very good it picks up all the bits on my carpets, even those bits of string that I usually have to pick up and put back down to encourage the vacuum cleaner to pick them up. The vacuum cleaner is also very good at picking up goggly eyes and sequins from my daughter's carpet.
The dust canister has a very good capacity I usually empty it once a week after vacuuming 5 days out of 7. The canister detaches quite easily. You need to press a lever on the front of the vacuum cleaner and then tilt the canister forwards to release. The canister has an easy empty clip on the bottom that when you press it in the bottom flaps open and all the dirt falls out. Make sure you are stood over the dustbin when you do that bit or you will need to vacuum again. The top of the dust canister also detaches to enable you to clean the filter. The filter is a lifetime filter and never needs replacing; just a gentle brushing with a soft brush will keep it in good working order.
The tools on this vacuum cleaner are all very handy; I mostly use the crevice tool and the tubes that extend the pipe. The vacuum cleaner also has an attachment with a rotating brush that is good for animal hair, as I have no animals only two hamsters, I can not comment on its hair removing ability.
The down side to this vacuum cleaner is its tendency to fall over when I am using the extendable pipe that is located on the back of the vacuum cleaner. The pipe does not stretch very far at all. I would say less than a meter as when the vacuum cleaner falls over it always seems to hit me on the legs or on back or head if I'm crouched down. This fact also makes it pretty difficult to vacuum the stairs on my own. The vacuum cleaner is light enough for me to be able to carry it up and down the stairs with no difficulty at all.
The handle of the vacuum cleaner is height adjustable, I have it on the lowest setting as I am 5ft 2 and if Mr H feels inclined to vacuum the handle adjusts to a height where he feels comfortable. The pipes in the back of the vacuum cleaner that feed the dust into the canister are clear, this allows you to see what has blocked the vacuum cleaner if it becomes blocked, the pipe also unscrews (Easter egg style) so you can remove the blockage without the need for prodding with a knitting needle.
Another good thing about this vacuum cleaner is that it comes with a 6 year warranty. I do think it will need this warranty due to the fact that it has serious balance problems when the extendable pipe is extended and tends to crash down backwards on to the handle. Overall the vacuum cleaner does seem quite flimsy and I don't expect it to outlive its warranty but as an emergency Christmas Eve purchase to stop me moaning about sparkly bits on the carpet it has more than done the job.
