He hires two private investigators to exchange ransom money to recover the statuette, but the trade goes down bad and Clay Roth is killed. This statue apparently belongs to a bad Yakuza mutha called Tanaka (played by Mako, oriental bad guy extraordinaire), who it turns out has a bit of a love of torture and extreme violence. Fred Olen Ray ended up with a bigger budget than he expected for this B-movie. It was made for $1.5m dollars, which is a fortune in b-movie terms. Ray's previous films had come in around the $100,000 mark and basically consisted of hacked together footage and some scantily clad babes filmed in a couple of days on left-over Corman sets (ref: Biohazard). Armed Response is a standard revenge/hostage/yakuza sort of caper, refreshingly straightforward after the convoluted mire of multiple plot twists and gimmicks used in modern cinema.
