Auto Focus (DVD) ... released 29 September, 2003 at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Auto Focus captures the scandalous private life of Bob Crane, best known as the star of German POW camp sitcom Hogan's Heroes. Greg Kinnear plays the affable comic actor, who nursed an obsession with sex--specifically pornography, strippers, swinging, domination, and especially the videotaping of his own sexual exploits. His behaviour led to the downfall of two marriages and enmeshed Crane in a strangely symbiotic relationship with a video equipment salesman named John Carpenter (Willem Dafoe); Carpenter provided the technology, and Crane (through the power of his fame) provided the girls. Their friendship ultimately wore thin and may have led to Crane's gruesome death. Auto Focus is a lot like an episode of VH-1's Behind the Music, but with sex in the place of the usual downfall-causing drugs; though elegantly filmed, it doesn't delve too deeply into Crane's joy, and so never gets a genuine feel for his pain either. --Bret Fetzer

Nearly the whole movie shows Crane as a sex crazed maniac who together with John Carpente...more

I have to say I have seen my share of movies that cross the line, my share of sleaze, and sleazettes, directors and actors trying to profit of anyone (dead or alive) and then having the excuse to say "Uh yeah we wanted to make a movie", then they say, "uh yeah it's a biography", "uh it's a celebration of that person's life". Sleazy directors and actors will come will a hundred cheap excuses to make a movie at the expense of someone else and trying to defend themselves but ultimately like the pieces of trash they are, so then "Auto Focus" is probably at the top of the "Trash list" of directors ...

Why is that the majority of the best films all get ignored over larger budget snoozers. I'm sure if people were actually given the opportunity to see a film with a good story and great performances more often then they'd take it. Auto Focus is another one of those films that got a limited US release and a small release in the UK. Thankfully DVD means that you can get the cinematic experience at home and this is where I sampled Paul Schraders latest film. In the 60's Hogans Heroes was a huge american TV show set in a POW camp. It's star was the affable Bob Crane who was a regular guy with the all american family. However as the show got ...
