Take your tissues with you if you go to see this film. It ends up squeezing out every emotion you ever had. This romantic drama is all about a love affair that happens in New York. Chef, Will Keane, played by Richard Gere, doesn't believe in forever. He just wants to sow his oats today and off he goes. Things change! He meets an attractive young designer called Charlotte (Winona Ryder). AUTUMN IN NEW YORK is directed by Joan Chen, who is better known in some circles as having played Josie Packard in David Lynch's surreal TV show TWIN PEAKS. I wasn't aware until now that she had ever done any directing herself. However, she has and the result is AUTUMN IN NEW YORK. The movie stars Richard Gere and Winona Ryder. Gere seems to me to always be playing characters who fall in love with women who are WAY too young for him (for example Julia Roberts in both PRETTY WOMAN and RUNAWAY BRIDE), and here he does the same - only this time it's Winona Ryder who he falls for (who is, in my opinion, by far a better actress than Roberts). I saw this 'tearjerker' on a flight coming back from New Zealand in February, and frankly I'd not given it a second thought since I saw an advert in the paper for it and thought 'my god, they've released it in the cinema?'. Frankly it's a straight to video, or straight to the TV to be honest. However, with heavyweights like Richard Gere and Winona Ryder playing the leads, what else can you expect. Even Elaine Strich thrown in for good measure who plays Ryder's grandmother. Set in New York (unsurprisingly given the title) it starts with Ryder celebrating a twenty-something birthday and Gere then appears on the screen. ...
