A Bug's Life (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 08 January, 2001 at Walt Disney Home Video / Features of the DVD: Animated, Full Screen, PAL, Widescreen / There was a rare magic on the big screen in 1995, when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story, and their second feature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye but Pixar's target is so lofty that it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible. Brighter and more colourful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers he decides to look for help ("We need bigger bugs!"). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help--a hearty bunch of bug warriors--and brings them back to the colony. Unfortunately they are just travelling performers, afraid of conflict. As with Toy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired. Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybird, Joe Ranft as the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick insect and Michael McShane as a pair of unintelligible woodlice. The scene-stealer is Atta's squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot (Hayden Panettiere), who has a big soft spot for Flik. More gentle and kid-friendly than Antz, A Bug Life's still has some good suspense and a wonderful demise in store for the villain. However, the film--a worldwide hit--will be remembered for its most creative touch: "outtakes" over the end credits à la many live-action comedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both "editions" of outtakes are contained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history right along with 1998's other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandy invasion in Saving Private Ryan. --Doug Thomas

Flik gets the brunt of the frustration thrown at him, He offers to go find help, to bring them back and set them to work. Of course the ants agree thinking its just a good excuse to get rid of him for a while. Off Flik goes and finds a terrible circus act who get sacked which is made up of some rather colourful and full of character bugs! He sees them m...more

Last night after not being able to sleep, I'd already watched Antz and submitted my review and I decided to watch this straight after it. Antz was ok (please see review) and I'd heard if you watched Antz you really should watch A Bugs Life as well! So when I bought Antz I popped this in my trolley as well! No wonder I'm always in the red eh? lol May I just say I was so shocked that this film was so similar to the story of Antz lol I felt a bit of De Ja Vu! A Bugs Life Plot.... The film has many characters, all in their own right but it is quite focused on Flik, an inventor ant, full of hope, optimisim and quite a lot of ideas on making ...

As per usual, last Christmas (it seems like such a long time....!) threw up a few good movies worth watching on the TV. It was Christmas 2001 when I saw Antz on TV, last Christmas, whilst flicking through the TV guide I noticed A Bugs Life advertised. I couldn’t remember whether this was what I’d seen the year earlier or not. I read the description, it sounded familiar. So much so I wasn’t going to bother watching it as I assumed it was what I’d seen the year earlier. By some stoke of luck though there wasn’t anything else worth watching at the time of this movie. (It was probably yet another repeat of Only Fools and Horses on the other ...

There's just something about a Pixar animated film that says quality. You just know it's going to be good without reading anything about it. This is because the makers concentrate on the story and characters as well as the visuals. A Bugs Life is no different. First you've got the outstanding CGI animation that is truly wonderful to look at. It bursts with colour and imagination. Then there are the characters such as a luvvie type circus magician in the form of an insect. A real nasty grasshopper with a bumbling brother and an ant with a clumsy knack for inventions. In this story the ants gather food for the grasshoppers until one ant messes the ...
