Cherry Falls (DVD) ... / DVD released 19 February, 2001 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / Cherry Falls, the eponymous small town in Cherry Falls, has some dirty secrets--secrets that come to light when a psychotic killer starts killing teenagers. But the killer has an unusual criterion: only virgins are marked for death. Cherry Falls is a striking movie that never got released in cinemas, probably because marketers didn't know what to do with it. It's not a winking, smirk-while-you-shriek twist on the genre like Scream, nor is it a broad parody like Scary Movie--instead, Cherry Falls tries (and largely succeeds) at trying to turn the clichés of slasher movies into something that will do more than make you jump in shock. It's still scary; few things are creepier than wandering the empty hallways of a high school after hours, and Cherry Falls takes full advantage of that. It's also often funny, mostly because the mechanics of a slasher movie have become just a little too much and you can't help laughing. But it also makes you think twice about attitudes towards sex--moments such as parents breaking into a brawl while talking about their children's sex activity, or an "experienced" girl's pep talk to an assembly of girls eager to lose their virginity, are both funny and caustic. Brittany Murphy (Clueless, Girl, Interrupted) shines as the sheriff's daughter caught in the middle of it all; Michael Biehn (The Terminator) is great as the earnest sheriff who knows more than he lets on; and Jay Mohr (Jerry Maguire) smoothly handles the part of a teacher with an unhealthy interest in Murphy. Cherry Falls doesn't tell you when it's funny or scary, which makes many viewers uncomfortable. But if you're interested in watching a slippery, layered examination of sexual attitudes that is also a successful, spooky slasher flick, then this movie is for you. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

The slasher movie gets yet another post Scream outing in he form of Cherry Falls, directed by the same guy who brought us Urban Legend. It differs from the usual slasher flick in one rather ingenious way, putting an entire new postmodern spin on the whole thing. Interesting it is in this respect, but sadly there isn't much else to it to keep our interest. It begins in the town of Cherry Falls, a name which is a play on the main focus of the movie. A killer is bumping off the local high school kids, picking solely on those who are known to be virgins, killing them brutally and carving the word virgin into their flesh. Of course(!?!) in order to save ...

I always tend to head my reviews with quotes from the movie if I can, and even the most Z-grade slasher has a few lines that are hilarious...intentionally or otherwise. 'Cherry Falls' is no exception, and that's why I've picked my favourite line from this slack teen horror, that appeared in the resurrected sub-genre almost as an afterthought. The rest of the script seems to be made up of lines randomly snipped out of a copy of Smash Hits magazine. Spiky haired loser: "Why are you wearing lipstick?" Maniac wearing make-up: "Because it makes me look pretty!" Forgetting everything 'Scream' ...

When I was in the states last summer the first film I ventured to see was X-Men and an advert was in front of it telling cinemas goers that Cherry Falls would be hitting a cinema near you this fall. Well it never arrived in the states but did get a release in the UK. There is a story behind this film. Those who have watch it may find it a tad disjointed and the deaths scenes very fleeting. Well there is a reason for this. The US censors had a hard time with some of the scenes in the film and as a result wouldn't grant it an 'R' rating unless cuts were made. Now the film-makers didn't want to tone down their vision but were forced to so the film ...
