Cliffhanger (DVD) ... Lithgow ... / DVD released 02 April, 2001 at Momentum Pictures / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Special Edition, Widescreen / Cliffhanger was a 1994 comeback of sorts for action hero Sylvester Stallone, this time thanks to director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) and some spectacularly rugged and vertigo-inducing, high-mountain terrain. The opening sequence alone delivers what the title promises, and there's an extraordinary airplane stunt that was later reprised, with modifications, in Air Force One. Stallone, looking as tough and craggy as the mountains themselves, is a rescue climber who finds himself going after a gang of crooks (headed by John Lithgow in his bad-guy mode) who've hijacked a US Treasury plane and crash landed in the Rockies with millions of bucks. Outrageous action-packed, snow-packed and scenery-packed chase sequences (featuring whirring helicopters, whooshing skis, popping gunfire and clanging pitons that earned the movie Oscar nominations for sound and sound editing) abound. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com

... made in 1993, but I think it has stood the test of time OK. The film is shot mostly in the outside, in the snowy mountains and this leads to some fantastic scenery shots. The snow really is magnificent to look at and was part of the enjoyment in this film for me. Stallone does his job well, showing off his strength by gripping to the edge of sheer mountains and doing more than his share of rescuing. His partner helping with the rescue is played by Michael Rooker and I think he does a better job of portraying a rescue...more

Premium Review Cliffhanger (DVD): Don't look Down! (509 words)

I don't know why people say that, don't look down. It just makes you think about it then look. Anyway..... I knew this was going to have a little more meaning than his usual gun-fight movies when he has that little accident on the mountain right at the start (don't want to reveal too much). With that unexpected turn of events, Cliffhanger just carries on. Stallone plays the part of Gabe Walker, a mountaineer who serves with the mountain rescue team in the Colorado Rockies. Trying to suppress the guilt of the little accident by leaving his job, he is suddenly thrown back in to the profession and now troubled by the activities of a group of ...

Made in 1993 and starring Sylvester Stallone, this is the film that made headlines when Stallone himself paid somewhere in the region of $150,000 so the crew could re-shoot a scene where a rabbit gets gruesomely shot, as preview audiences found the scene so out of taste and different to the rest of the film, it was feared this would hamper the films success. Whether this is right or not, we will never know, but the films sure went on to be a huge success, and it was only a matter of time before it was given a suitable DVD release. Directed by Renny Harlan (Who is he I hear you ask! Also director of Die Hard2m Elm Street 4 and 5, and more recently the long kiss ...

Premium Review Cliffhanger (DVD): What happens if you want to have a scratch? (447 words)

If you are a one armed rockclimber hanging from a cliff? Well that is not answered in this film. What is answered is can Slyvester Stallone play a part with more to it than the odd grunt and groan and carrying a big machine gun. The answer is yes, he can. The Film starts off in a very dramatic way with a terrible accident occuring during a climb somewhere in the Colorado Mountains. Stallone plays the part of a Mountain Rescue worker who leaves the profession after the accident as wel las his girlfriend, friends and lifestyle he loved. Al lof this is turned upsidedown when he returns after being away for some time. The accident that caused him to ...
