Code 46 (DVD) ... Actors: Tim Robbins, Samantha Morton ... / DVD released 28 February, 2005 at 2 Entertain Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / Like Gattacadid before it, Code 46 extrapolates from the present to posit a chilling, dystopian look at our genetically regimented future. In the corporate-controlled, near-future scenario presented by prolific director Michael Winterbottom and his regular screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce, nations and languages have merged to form a polyglot society in which genetic imperfections are avoided by the strict enforcement of Code 46, which prohibits sex between people who share 100%, 50%, or even 25% matching DNA. As an insurance-fraud investigator in Shanghai to investigate the issuance of forged passports (a major offense in an overcrowded world), Tim Robbins meets his prime suspect (Samantha Morton, echoing her role in Minority Report), and their violation of Code 46 has tragic and ultimately dehumanizing repercussions. Fascinating as a "what-if" scenario, Winterbottom's film is more successful as a melancholy mood-piece than a science-fiction tale. While the plot and characters suffer from occasionally vague definition, Code 46 offers a fascinating study of human longing in an age of oppressive globalization. --Jeff Shannon

In a world of cloning, where clones are subject to so many different factors - environment, climate, food culture, chance - that they are ultimately different people, it is very difficult ...more

A charismatic corporate investigator is flown to Shanghai, where a company making medical ID / visa pass thingies are witnessing fatally doled out forgeries among their output. He instantly finds the culprit, but does nothing other than let her off, and fall in love with her... This sounds like a reasonable scenario for a film that's both small-scale and globetrotting, and that's just what it is. It's very quietly science fiction - in that it's not Alien 6 meets The Matrix. You might enjoy the film without any concerns about its futuristic setting, although it is important, as we can see by dissecting our opening paragraph. *Charismatic...* Tim ...

Intelligent British science fiction isn't a term heard particularly often these days. In fact, dumb British science fiction isn't really heard of either. Simply put, for some reason the British film industry backs away from the whole genre, which is a shame, although when a unique piece does manage to break through, it does make it all the more special. Code 46 is such a piece, although before one can appreciate it for what it is, one has to accept that pretty much everything within this film has been done before. So much of it being lifted from elsewhere may be annoying in many films, but Code 46 takes its basis from some of the intelligent sci-fi greats; ...
