Commando (DVD) ... Dawn Chong ... / DVD released 25 August, 2003 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / A massively underrated action thriller which kept Schwarzenegger occupied between blockbusters, Commando may be one of the last shoot-out films ever to have real characters in it. Not, of course, that they're anything other than stereotypes, but they're painted with such detailed, positive strokes that it's impossible not to relate to them. Arnie plays a retired military special-ops officer whose daughter (played with an expert balance of cute/feisty by Alyssa Milano) is kidnapped by the baddest of bad guys, who'll only hand her back as and when he's assassinated a tiresome banana-republic president on their behalf. Needless to say, Arnie is deeply annoyed by this, rescues the moppet single-handed amid more bullets and explosions than you can shake a stuntman's pay cheque at, and... well, why spoil the fun by revealing any more? Co-star Rae Dawn Chong gets some nice one-liners as the innocent bystander who gets caught up in the mayhem. The DVD comes with no additional features at all, but who needs 'em anyway? --Roger Thomas

He escapes, killing his guard and jumping out, and has until the plane lands to find where Bennett is keeping Jenny and rescue her. The Cast and Performances Arnie is excellent in this role - it almost seems like it is what he was born to do. The image suits perfectly - the musclebound former Special Forces Colonel wearing sleeveless flak jackets and puffing on a cigar - priceless. A complete stereotype, but worn...more

John Matrix (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a retired soldier. His old outfit of elite soldiers is being systematically hunted down and killed. Matrix's old commanding officer, General Kirby, arrives at his family mountain retreat with the bad news. His daughter, Jenny (a young Alyssa Milano) is dead set against the idea of her Dad going back to his old job. He concurs and refuses Kirby's offer of tracking down the perpetrators. However, that would make a very poor, and short, movie. Obviously, it isn't long before the bad guys show up and throw their weight around a bit. Catching Big Arnie unawares means that they can kidnap Jenny in the hope that he ...

Like a true action star, Arnold Schwarzenegger bounced back from the disaster that was Red Sonja to make Commando in the same year, 1985. This time, the actor has a bit more of a speaking part, and we actually find out the big man can speak the language, quite well in fact, even enough to add a little humour into the proceedings. Commando was the first of Arnie's roles to combine a bit of humour with all out action, and was to become a trademark of many of his films. The Plot Retired Special Forces Colonel John Matrix has left the forces to spend time on a secluded mountain house with his daughter Jenny. Not so muc luck. Members of Matrix's former ...

Commando is the best movie ever made. No, really. Let me explain... The movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime as John Matrix, the baddest mudda fugga on Earth. The ridiculous plot is an effective vehicle for Arnie to perform countless ridiculous stunts (like jumping from a jumbo jet during take off) and to brutally murder about 100 bad guys (made up of various henchmen and piss-ant soldiers) without any guilt or moral pondering. This makes for the most entertaining, funny, quotable and deceptively vicious action movie of all time. The movie kicks off with a guy (later we find out he's an ex-commando from Arnie's special forces unit) ...
