The Core (DVD) ... Eckhart, Hilary Swank ... / DVD released 13 October, 2003 at Paramount Home Entertainment (UK) / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / The Core is high-tech Hollywood hokum at its finest; smarter than Armageddon and equally extreme. It's scientifically ridiculous, naturally, but this variant of Fantastic Voyage at least tries to be credible as it plunges deep into the Earth's inner core, where a formulaic team of experts pilot an earth-boring ship to jump-start the planet's spinning molten interior, now stalled by a military secret that could seal the fate of all humankind. It's a geophysicist's daydream, which only a fine ensemble cast could rescue from absurdity, and director Jon Amiel (Entrapment, Copycat) draws excellent work (and plenty of humorous interplay) from Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Delroy Lindo and a host of memorable supporting players, especially DJ Qualls as the world's greatest cyber-nerd. With enough digital FX disasters to satisfy anyone's apocalyptic fantasies, this is a popcorn thriller with all the bells and whistles that its genre demands. Sit back, pump up the volume and enjoy the dazzling ride. --Jeff Shannon

... fiction genre is that you might not know the technology but there is a certain amount of science fact behind it. Granted the likes of Star Trek work on the basis that it is so far in the future that they have discovered new technologies and science but it seems realistic even if it isn't real. So a film of this genre which is based on the Earth and the earth's core must have a lot of science fact to back up the fiction. WRONG! There is more fantasy than fiction in this film. Any self respecting GSCE science...more

Premium Review The Core (DVD): Anyone got an air freshener? (1859 words)

Well there is a reason I would ask if anyone has any air freshener - actually there are two. One is because it is used to demonstrate a rather important point in the story (I won't spoil it for you) and two because this film stinks. Well I say it stinks - there is so much that is bad about The Core and yet I do detect a slight whiff of roses in the background but it is so faint that the air freshener is still required. Let me explain. The Core (2003) which was directed by English director Jon Amiel (Somersby and Entrapment - yep it's that bad!), is another end of the world scenario film. The impending doom doesn't come from meteors or alien invaders or any ...

Premium Review Deep Penetration (1214 words)

I’ve read reviews of this film that heralded it as the best thing since sliced bread. I’ve read others that linked it only to a turkey. As such, I’d like to position my review somewhere in between. Think of this as a turkey sandwich. When a group of individuals suddenly drops dead for no apparent reason, the military drafts in the services of two scientists to try and identify what caused their deaths. Josh Keyes – an expert in electro-magnetics – quickly identifies that all the dead people used pacemakers. As such, he suspects that a sudden electro-magnetic pulse has brought about their deaths. Confident that this was just a freak of nature, the military ...
