Cutthroat Island (DVD) ... / DVD released 01 December, 2003 at Momentum Pictures / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Although this mega-budget action epic flopped at the box office with a resounding thud, Cutthroat Island has had a healthy shelf life on home video, where the film can be savoured in private as a spectacular guilty pleasure. Geena Davis plays Morgan, the swashbuckling daughter of an aging buccaneer who inherits one-third of a map to a secret pirate treasure. However, the map is in Latin, and she needs a lowdown thief and scoundrel (and presumably Latin scholar), played by Matthew Modine, to translate the map when they obtain the other two pieces. That's when the mayhem begins and the dashing duo race for the treasure against Morgan's scheming uncle (Frank Langella) and a hoard of greedy pirates. With wall-to-wall action ably handled by Davis' then-husband Renny Harlin, Cutthroat Island is more fun than its box-office performance would indicate. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

... stop her.Genna davies and Mathew modine make a excelllent team as the comicly search for the treasure and attempt to out wit each other, its sort of like a pre pirates of the carabiean movie to be honest. It is however action packed ,it rarley slows downs and is very entertaining.Although in the begining the map is written on a scalp the film is not gory and suitable for children, the story rounds it self of nicely,i would recomend this film to people who have enjoyed the piates of the carabiean movies ,indiana jones and ...more

Let's get his straight; I hate Cutthroat Island (as you might have gathered from my Waterworld review). And I'm truly worried about the sanity of the people on Dooyoo, since this absolutely awful movie has had mostly 4 star reviews and people saying it's good??!!. I just wanted to write this so that the average rating comes down a bit. I'd better say this before I begin; I haven't actually seen every minute of the film, and it was a while since I watched it on TV, so some of the details might be a bit rusty. This is because I switched off after about the first 45 minutes since it was completely unwatchable, then I tuned back in for the last half an hour or so. But I do ...

What do you get when you take $100million budget, a quality director, a quality actress, some lavish set pieces, some high adventure and a whole heap of nostalgia thrown in for good measure? Give up? Well, what you get it appears is universally slated by a bunch of so-called 'professional' movie critics who obviously wouldn't know a good movie if it jumped up and bit a chunk out of their collective fat a$$e$!! Cutthroat Island is NOT a bad movie despite what you would have been led to believe back in 1995...it is in fact a rather good movie. It doesn't try to be anything other than what it is - whichis basically a lame-brained ...

What a great film ! It's a shame, a damn shame that this was sneered at by the critics. This is a true, old fashioned swashbuckler, the spirit of Erol Flynn flicks realised with a huge budget and some modern trappings. It's a hugely exciting pirate adventure with plenty of action and amazing scenery. The plot follows Geena Davis as a notorious female pirate who inherits part of a map from her father. The map is one third of a whole, which leads to fabulous treasure, buried on the legendary Cut throat island. As She gathers her scurvy crew and sets off to find the other parts of the map, she is pitted against her evil pirate uncle Dogg, an even more ...
