G.I. Jane (DVD)

Description: Genre: Action & Adventure / Theatrical Release: 1997 / Director: Ridley Scott / Actors: Demi Moore, Viggo Mortensen ... ... more
G.I. Jane (DVD) ... / DVD released 26 March, 2001 at First Independent Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / It seemed like a pretty good career move, and for the most part it was. Demi Moore will never top any rational list of great actresses, but as her career stalled in the mid-1990s she had enough internal fire and external physicality to be just right for her title role in G.I. Jane. Her character's name isn't Jane--it's Jordan O'Neil--but the fact that she lacks a penis makes her an immediate standout in her elite training squad of Navy SEALs. She's been recruited as the first female SEAL trainee through a series of backroom political manoeuvres and must prove her military staying power against formidable odds--not the least of which is the abuse of a tyrannical master chief (Viggo Mortensen) who puts her through hell to improve her chances of success. Within the limitations of a glossy star vehicle, director Ridley Scott manages to incorporate the women-in-military issue with considerable impact, and Moore--along with her conspicuous breast enhancements and that memorable head-shaving scene--jumps into the role with everything she's got. Not a great movie by any means, but definitely a rousing crowd pleaser and it's worth watching just to hear Demi shout the words "Suck my ----!!" (rhymes with "chick"). --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Positive reinforcements like G.I.JANE are good for political gains, women do respond to the inspiration present in our film, even if we have women in Navy, Air force, Army we have destroyed their natural ...more

I have to say that when ths came out atthe cinema I thougt "Oh hell no...wild horses wouldn't get me to see THAT movie". I thought Hollywood would make their usual pigs ear of the whole 'woman in a mans world' story or turn it into a piece of exploitative claptrap - the title G. I. Jane does little to make you think otherwise. However, that of course was recogning without Ridley Scott being the man in the director's chair here and of course, he manages to produce another fine movie, we shouldn't really expect much else. The basic concept of this movie is that a female naval officer wants to join the toughest military outfit in the ...

Don't get me wrong, I was expecting to dislike this film before I went to see it. The premise seemed weak and the reviews that I read were that it was awful. I've got to say though, it really impressed me. The idea behind this film, is that a woman is allowed in to the elite Navy Seals as a sop to Feminists. The political machinations are interesting and fairly believable and the female Senator is superb (is it Olympia Dukakis? hmmmm...it might be). The script and the action sequences are well done and Demi Moore turns in a respectable performance as political pawn out to prove herself. The Master-Chief (Drill-instructor) is a grade-A ...

I first came across this film through television. As you may know, various channels have their own 'film' night where they show what they think, are/were popular films. Usually there's at least one week build up to the films through advertisements, and that is where I first laid eyes on G.I Jane, A film brought to us by Ridley Scott, the director of other classics such as 'Thelma and Louise' and 'Alien'. G.I Jane is the story of a woman named LT Jordan O'Neil, (played by Demi Moore), who is selected as the first woman to participate in the ...
