Gattaca (DVD) ... Hawke, Uma Thurman ... / DVD released 27 December, 2004 at Uca Catalogue / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Confidently conceived and brilliantly executed, Gattaca had a somewhat low profile release in 1997, but audiences and critics hailed the film's originality. It's since been recognised as one of the most intelligent science fiction films of the 1990s. Writer-director Andrew Niccol, the talented New Zealander who also wrote the acclaimed Jim Carrey vehicle The Truman Show, depicts a near-future society in which one's personal and professional destiny is determined by one's genes. In this society, "Valids" (genetically engineered) qualify for positions at prestigious corporations, such as Gattaca, which grooms its most qualified employees for space exploration. "In-Valids" (naturally born), such as the film's protagonist, Vincent (Ethan Hawke), are deemed genetically flawed and subsequently fated to low-level occupations in a genetically caste society. With the help of a disabled "Valid" (Jude Law), Vincent subverts his society's social and biological barriers to pursue his dream of space travel; any random mistake--and an ongoing murder investigation at Gattaca--could reveal his plot. Part thriller, part futuristic drama and cautionary tale, Gattaca establishes its social structure so convincingly that the entire scenario is chillingly believable. With Uma Thurman as the woman who loves Vincent and identifies with his struggle, Gattaca is both stylish and smart, while Jude Law's performance lends the film a note of tragic and heartfelt humanity.--Jeff Shannon

He takes Jeromes identity and attempts to become something everyone said was impossible for a man like him. Crowned Review Gattaca (DVD): There is no gene for fate (1117 words)

Rating:

This film, largely the project of one man, writer and director Andrew Niccol, is a slow-paced but enthralling story exploring a very plausible near future. Vincent, our hero, is one of the tiny minority of children born in this era not genetically modified in any way. He was conceived "traditionally", in a not unattractive car, and born without any natural susceptibilities removed. His brother Anton, customised by a local geneticist, was deemed worthy of his father's name and always performed better than Vincent. But, like the heroes of so many human-interest stories, Vincent had a dream. This dream and the determination to overcome his society's ...

A truely inspiring movie. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, who has really put his heart and soul in to this one. Containing a star studded cast, including Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and Uma Thurman. The film itself is set in the future, when the world is obsessed with Genetics and what your DNA will allow your body to achieve. The main character, Vincent, (Ethan Hawke) is born with a genetic disorder which prevents him from realising his life long dream of travelling into space. He then meets Jerome (Jude Law) who is perfect, but was disabled in an accident. He takes Jeromes identity and attempts to become something everyone said was impossible for a man ...

Gattaca is a futuristic movie, set in a World where people are judged not on the colour, or race, or looks, but on their very genetic makeup. Genetics have advanced to such a stage that prospective parents, if they choose, can actually decide on the sex and qualities of their unborn children before pregnancy. Genetic defects such as heart conditions, sight problems, and hereditary illnesses can be totally avoided, simply by visiting your local doctor - who will create a person from the very best parts of both parents. If that were the entire plot of the film,it would be very tedious. Fortunately, it isn't. Though most parents choose to conceive using the ...
