Nicholas Lyndhurst is a fantastic actor, never better than in Only Fools and Horses, but despite not having a character quite as strong as Rodney in Goodnight Sweetheart, he still plays his role perfectly. While time-travelling is rather ‘cliché’, this comedy boasts originality and connects good laughs with decent story lines. Ron is a fantastic character in the 90’s, also brilliantly acted, but almost everybody is realistically acted. The exception here, is Reg. He lacks realism in an attempt to raise a smile, unlike Gary’s best friend. Never the less, this is a very good programme. ...

What I am reviewing is the first series of Goodnight Sweetheart on region 2 DVD With the BBC needing a new refreshing comedy in 1993 they received a script from Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran about a modern day time traveller. The story was about TV repair man Gary Sparrow who accidentally finds himself back in 1940 after going through a time portal in the east end of London. The BBC liked the idea as it was different. They gave it a six episode first series to see if the audience liked it to see how it fit in with their schedule.
