Premium Review Hilary And Jackie (DVD): Sisters, sisters. Never such devoted sisters (799 words)
by MAFARRIMOND - written on 01/09/04 (Very useful, 157 readings)
Rating:

Hilary and Jackie were sisters. Both were talented musicians who grew up playing their given instruments together. Fate was to take the sisters in different directions but the bond of sisterhood would remain throughout. Jacqueline?s life was sadly cut short by the debilitating condition Multiple Sclerosis. Her illness was to impact dramatically on her life, her career, and her relationships and was to make particular demands on her sister. How much would you do for your sister? I saw this film this morning and it has haunted me all day. It is about the tragic Jacqueline Du Pre and her relationships with her sister Hilary and others. Taking the viewer from the two girls' childhood through to Jaqueline's death at the mere age of 42 the film is emotional, very dramatic and the acting of the main characters is superb. The film is about sibling rivalry at it's most intense and charts Jaqueline's rise to fame and her tragic illness which cuts her dazzling career short and her sister Hilary's life which was lived somewhat in Jaqueline's shadow. Hilary led a far more 'normal' life than Jaqueline (apart ...

This film has to be one of the most moving films that I have ever seen. I saw it at the cinema when it came out, and recently got it from HMV for a fiver... The film is a biography of one of the most famous cellists in the world, Jacqueline Du Pré, who died fairly recently of a tragic illness. Her sister, Hilary who was a flautist is also featured heavily, and the story is set from both of their points of views. The story is one of jealously, greed, love, hate and tragedy. It is a biography of the musical and social life of Jacqueline Du Pré, who is finding life hard. After "borrowing" Hilary's husband, bonds are broken between people, and things ...
