Independence Day (DVD) ... Will Smith, Bill Pullman ... / DVD released 17 May, 2004 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL / In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh

In fact, because the on-screen mayhem and action is so exciting, the film still stands up well, even if the effects do lose a little of their impact. The effects complement the on-screen action, rather than demanding all the attention. The film is bolstered by some very likeable and charismatic leads. Will Smith (in the role that really propelled him into the big time) plays fig...more

Well you've probably guessed it, this is a review about the action packed, alien saga Independence day, released on July 3rd 1996, and starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. This is to date my favourite Will Smith action will along side Bad Boys 1 and 2. It's probably the movie that made Will Smith into an international box office success, and was certainly a step up from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I was actually a huge fan of this film, and I would have to say it ranks in my all time top 5 action film list; it had a great cast, a great plot, and superb special effect scenes. Plot Outline: Well it's what you might expect of an action ...

About two years ago, I saw this film for the first time on VHS and then decided to buy it on dvd to see how much better the quality was. To say the least, I was disappointed. The quality isn't improved at all, The makers have just added extra features to the disc(s). At the time of purchase I paid £11.99 for this 2 disc DVD, which is quite good considering the price you pay for DVD's these days lol. Disc one is entitled ''The Invasion''. It includes: *The Special Edition, with 9 minutes of restored footage, plus the original theatrical version. *Scene-specific commentary by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin *Commentary by ...

If you look at my list of film reviews, you'll see that whilst I am certainly a fan of extremely good thought-provoking films, I also enjoy watching complete and utter rubbish! I'll leave you to guess which category Independence Day falls into... Oh, go on then. To stop you exploding with the tension, I'll tell you. Independence Day is an unremittingly crap film, but crap in a fun, enjoyable way. From start to finish, it's jam packed with clichéd characters, appalling dialogue, cheesy over-sentimentality and a plot that you could write on the back of a postage stamp and still have room for your weekly shopping list. It's essentially a 50s B-Movie with updated ...
