Jack And Sarah (DVD) ... / DVD released 23 July, 2001 at MGM Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / The story of a father and baby daughter, 1995's Jack and Sarah is the best cinematic depiction of what came to be known as "the 90s man". No matter how bad things get we know Richard E Grant will eventually learn to get in touch with his feelings and express his emotions. Grant plays Jack, whose reaction to the loss of his wife during childbirth is initially complete rejection followed by an alcoholic binge. Jack's family coax fatherhood from him easily enough however and this is where the film's heart lies. Brushing away the bitter beginning, Grant's comedic performance in juggling life around newborn baby Sarah is often hilarious: the image of the child in a sock hat being carried in a padded envelope is priceless. Bouncing off Grant's acting are some terrific cameos from Judi Dench as his stuffy mum and Sir Ian McKellen as a convincingly inebriated butler. Samantha Mathis plays an American waitress who provides a twist to the tale. There's genuine chemistry between her and Grant, specifically when they are both around the outrageously cute baby Sarah. Written and directed by Tim Sullivan, this is clearly a very personal expression of the meaning of family. Although backed by lots of Simply Red songs, it hopefully won't be one that's too quickly outdated. On the DVD: The ratio is confusingly stated as "Widescreen 4:3". Effectively it's an anamorphic 1:66:1 presentation giving a tad more edge than its video predecessor. Sound is in Dolby surround. The minimal extras are four repetitive TV spots and two theatrical trailers. --Paul Tonks

... introduced to the main storyline when Jack's wife Sarah passes away during childbirth leaving Jack to cope with the new baby. It is clear that Jack is finding it hard enough to cope with losing his wife, his solemate without having to cope with a demanding baby that he feels no connection to after his wife was lost through giving birth to his child. Don't be put off by thinking that this is the plot of the story as it isn't by far, there is so much more to this film and its real mixture of characters that this movie ha...more

Premium Review Jack And Sarah (DVD): My chick flick favourite all time (717 words)

Whilst sat watching the adverts on the TV I heard the song "Stars" by Simply Red which always makes me think of one of my favourite girlie films, Jack and Sarah and decided to force my other half into watching it as I wanted to watch something different. The film is based on Jack (Richard E Grant) a Lawyer who is married to his lovely wife Sarah (Imogen Stubbs) and when we meet the couple it is clear that they are to be parents shortly, they are living in a house which has still not been completed by the builders and Jack has to cope with the tramp that lives in his skip, his snobbery at the beginning of the film is so typically British where he ...

Hi. My name is Morgie and I like 'chick flicks'. But ya know something? I don't care what you all think, coz I love this film! There I said it. Yes, this is (as far as I'm concerned) a 'chick flick', and I don't care who knows that I watch it maybe a little more often than I should. *Morgie takes a deep breath, relieved to have finally admitted her terrible affliction* Okay, I think I can carry on. Where was I? Oh, I remember now. I was gonna tell you about the film. Well, it's a romantic comedy type thingamajig, but with some real heartache and tears and stuff. Really. But don't let this terrible ...

The only reason I had a watch of Jack and Sarah was the constant comments I kept reading about how Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl was little more than a remake of it. While there are certainly some similar plot points, on the whole though I would say that the two are entirely different. The best part though was finding a nice little film that I probably would have missed otherwise. Walking the line between drama and comedy is not an easy one for any film. If you're trying to push serious themes, it becomes difficult to crack jokes at the same time. Likewise, a dramatic event in a comedic film can ...
