Live and Let Die (DVD) ... DVD released 03 November, 2003 at MGM Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. More self-consciously suave and formal than predecessor Sean Connery, he immediately re-established Bond as an uncomplicated and wooden fellow for the '70s. This film also marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting super-villains on the order of Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.comOn the DVD: Anyone old enough to remember the old milk marketing board commercials will relish the sight of James Bond exhorting everyone to "drink a pinta milka day" in one of the TV spots included here. Elsewhere in the special features, the characteristically in-depth "making of" featurette has a mixture of both contemporary and new interviews plus behind-the-scenes footage (the alligator-jumping sequence is positively hair-raising). The first of two audio commentaries is hosted by John Quark of the Ian Fleming Foundation and features a variety of cast and crew members, notably director Guy Hamilton; the second has writer Tom Mankiewicz on his own, who in between pauses has the occasional interesting thing to say. Overall another good package of features to accompany another excellent anamorphic print. --Mark Walker

... previous movies. Roger Moore is the typical English gentleman, very charming and fascinating, and women fall for him. The movie has got plenty of action, between New York, Louisiana, London and the Caribbeans. It is a movie for Bond fans, the plot in itself is an adventure plot, you like the movie if you like the action, plus there is a nice soundtrack, and surely great landscape. On a winter day this movie reminds you what good life in the Caribbean is! I think the producer wanted to exploit the line of the occult,...more

Crowned Review Live and Let Die (DVD): Moore Not Less (1390 words)
by Jake Speed - written on 24.09.07 (Very useful, 177 readings)

In 1972 the producers of the James Bond series needed a new 007 actor again. Sean Connery had finally departed after returning for 1971's Diamonds Are Forever and everyone was well aware that George Lazenby, the first non-Connery Bond, had been rejected in 1969. Stepping into Connery's shoes seemed like an impossible job. The Lazenby gamble had not paid off and Eon were not inclined to cast another young unknown actor. The studio (MGM) suggested a Hollywood star could fill the Connery void and starting bringing up names like Clint Eastwood and Steve Mcqueen. Cubby Broccoli, the producer of the franchise, was agahst at this prospect and promptly rejected Burt ...

Following Sean Connery's 1 film return in Diamonds Are Forever, and with George Lazenby having burnt bridges with his behaviour and demands following On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the Bond team needed a new man to fill the shoes of the charismatic MI6 agent. Enter Mr. Suave, Roger Moore, to film Live And Let Die, the first of 7 films in which he was to play James Bond. The Plot Following the suspicious deaths of three agents, James Bond 007 is sent to New York to infiltrate a heroin-producing ring, where he encounters the mysterious Dr Kananga and Mr. Big. Kananga's henchmen are formidable, with a voodoo master, tarot card reader and a right hand ...

Live and Let Die (DVD): Roger Moore's first and best. (149 words)

Well, what can I say about this alround brilliant film from the opening sequence in the island of San Monique to the ultimate 'on train' fight sequence, Roger Moore is at his very best. Despite this being Roger's first outing as Bond, his career gets worse. However, if you want to get in to 007 films then this is the place to start. It's ironic, because Roger Moore is the worst Bond (excluding George Lasenby) there is: he runs like a chicken and has eyes like a weimaraner dog and surely the women do NOT find him attractive. Yet, his suave and cocky attitude is just the best you'll find. Congratulations to the sound crew as Bond ...
