Lost In Translation (DVD) ... released 28 June, 2004 at Momentum Pictures / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Like a good dream, Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation envelopes you with an aura of fantastic light, moody sound, head-turning love, and a feeling of déjà vu, even though you've probably never been to this neon-fused version of Tokyo. Certainly Bob Harris has not. The 50-ish actor has signed-on for big money shooting whiskey ads instead of doing something good for his career or his long-distance family. Jetlagged, helplessly lost with his Japanese-speaking director and out of sync with the metropolis, Harris (Bill Murray, never better) befriends the married but lovelorn 25-year-old Charlotte (played with heaps of poise by 18-year-old Scarlett Johansson). Even before her photographer husband all but abandons her, she is adrift like Harris but in a total entrapment of youth. How Charlotte and Bill discover their soul mates will be cherished for years to come. Written and directed by Coppola (The Virgin Suicides), the film is far more atmospheric than plot-driven: we whiz through Tokyo parties, karaoke bars and odd nightlife, always ending up in the impossibly posh hotel where the two are staying. The wisps of bittersweet loneliness of Bill and Charlotte are handled smartly and romantically, but unlike modern studio films, this isn't a May to December fling film. Surely and steadily, the film ends on a much-talked-about grace note, which may burn some, yet awards film lovers who "always had Paris" with another cinematic destination of the heart. --Doug Thomas

... however, a rewarding experience. Invest your time and attention in Lost in Translation and you will be rewarded. It broods along, and slowly a connection grows not only between the characters on screen, but also between the characters and the audience. I've not seen many films with such a warm pair of protagonists. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson do magnificent jobs in creating believable, likable characters. Their bond on screen grows beautifully, and one unique thing about their relationship through the film is that it ...more

Bob Harris used to be an action movie star, he had fame all over the world and thought life couldn’t get any better. Until he started to get older and was largely dismissed in the business of show, now he is being paid ridiculously large amounts of money to advertise alcohol in Tokyo. His life is in ruins, his marriage has no passion, his children are forgetting about him and he is suffering from insomnia, he just lives this life of constant pain, quietly suffering trying desperately to put on a brave face. Charlotte, is a fresh face beauty who just recently moved to Tokyo with her new husband John, an important photographer. She has just finished a degree in philosophy, ...

Crowned Review Remains of the Day meets Insomnia (1106 words)

Lost in Translation is the second film from Sofia Coppola, and it is almost as different from The Virgin Suicides as it is possible to imagine. Scarlet Johannson seems to have become the thinking man?s Kirsten Dunst in recent months as she?s become the hottest starlet in town, and in this film she has space to spread her acting muscles. The plot is simple. Middle-aged actor Rob Harris (Bill Murray) has travelled to Tokyo to shoot some whisky adverts, to his obvious annoyance. While there he hangs around with the much younger Charlotte, is unable to sleep, gets drunk, and looks bemused at various Japanese things. That really is about it. The action ...
