Matilda (DVD) ... 26 May, 1998 at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / Danny DeVito's adaptation of the Roald Dahl book for children is mostly just fine, helped along quite a bit by the charming performance of Mara Wilson (Mrs Doubtfire) as the eponymous young Matilda, a brilliant girl neglected by her stupid, self-involved parents (DeVito and Rhea Perlman). Ignored at home, Matilda escapes into a world of reading, exercising her mind so much she develops telekinetic powers. Good thing, too: sent off to a school headed by a cruel principal, Matilda needs all the help she can get. DeVito takes a highly stylized approach that is sometimes reminiscent of Barry Sonnenfeld (director of Get Shorty, a DeVito production), and his judgement is not the best in some matters, such as letting the comic-scary sequences involving the principal go on too long. But much of the film is delightful and funny.--Tom Keogh

During the time she is left alone she goes to the library to read and eventually gets a library card so she can take the books home. When she does her dad (played by Danny DeVito) gets really mad! Later, Matilda asks to go to school as she is the appropriate age to be in 1st grade. Her mum and dad argue with her about her age. Matilda claims she is six but her dad says she is 5 and her mum thinks she is four. M...more

Premium Review Matilda (DVD): Delightful Dahl (933 words)

The works of Roald Dahl almost inevitably make for good films. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (starring Gene Wilder) is a notable exception (at least in my opinion, but it was an awfully long time ago when we were all extremely young and naive), but there have been some wonderful films in the last few years (James And The Giant Peach, The Witches) and Matilda is probably the best of them. The book is ace, and the tape version with Peggy Mount (I think) as the evil Trunchbowl is a great version and sets a great challenge for the film to live up to, but it manages it. ...

Fed up with the same old Disney animation films,I bought My daughter the film Matilda. The film was taken from Roald Dahl's "Matilda" and made into a children's film by Danny Devito,He also stars in the film. It's about a bright and talented little girl called Matilda played by Mara Wilson. Her parents are real rum characters, father is Harry played by Danny Devito, a bit of a crook, being a used car salesman. Her mother is Zinnia played by Rhea Pearlman whose just obsessed with soap operas and playing Bingo. Neither of them have the slightest interest in poor Matilda, eventually they send Her off to Crunchem Hall ...

When this film first came out in 1996 it was rated PG, I think that this film was funny and ideal for young children. As the film is made by the best selling author Roald Dahl, Matilda is a hilarious film. Mara Wilson- she plays Matilda she loves reading books and learning she is a genius and she doesnt go to school but she soon starts at Crunchem Hall. The head mistress is evil and she locks he children up if they are bad. Rhea Perlman- she plays Zinnia, Matilda's mum. Zinnia likes to play bingo, she wins the jackpot one day and decides to celebrate by buying a new car and taking her family out. Danny Devito- plays Harry, ...
