It is a shame that kids today will only know Richard Attenborough through his appearances in movies like JURASSIC PARK and this one, MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET. When he appears on screen these days it is usually only as a bit of a doddery old duffer, whereas he was an accomplished actor in some classic movies of yesteryear and is also one of this country’s best directors. Having said that, I did enjoy this movie. Attenborough play a department store Santa Claus in New York who goes on trial in order to prove that he really is the man in question. It’s a feel-good movie (actually a remake of an Oscar-winning film from 1947), and it certainly does make you ...

Being a child of black and white TV I can still remember the thrill I felt the first time I watched this film. I was only about 5 or 6 years old when I first saw it and could not believe that people doubted the existence of Father Christmas. This is a lovely film where the identity of good old Santa is put into question when an elderly gent, claiming to be Chris Cringles himself, is put to work in a department store and a rival store sets about discrediting him. Attempts are made to commit the gent to an asylum and other underhanded things happen but the case of identity is taken to court. There would be horror if the judiciary ...
