Andrei Tarkovsky was born in Zavrzhe in 1932 in what is now Belarus. He was the son of the poet Arseni Tarkovski and the actress Maria Ivanovna. His father's poetry features in Mirror and his mother appears in the film when Margarita Terekhova, the leading actress of the film, looks at her own reflection only to see herself appear as an old lady. Mirror is Tarkovsky's visually transcendent masterpiece made in the 1970s. It is a Russian film and therefore subtitled. Mirror is an autobiographical montage of the directors life that abandons any sense of a linear narrative. One might say that it takes the form of a stream of consciousness. There is no ...
