Mystic River (DVD) ... 01 June, 2006 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Superior acting, writing and direction are on impressive display in the Oscar-winning Mystic River, Clint Eastwood's 24th directorial outing and one of the finest films of 2003. Sharply adapted by LA Confidential Oscar-winner Brian Helgeland from the novel by Dennis Lehane, this chilling mystery revolves around three boyhood friends in working-class Boston--played as adults by Tim Robbins, Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon. They're drawn together by a crime from the past and a murder (of the Penn character's 19-year-old daughter) in the present. These dual tragedies arouse a vicious cycle of suspicion, guilt and repressed anxieties, primed to explode with devastating and unpredictable results. Eastwood is perfectly in tune with this brooding material, giving his flawless cast (including Laura Linney, Marcia Gay Harden and Laurence Fishburne) ample opportunity to plumb the depths of a resonant human tragedy, leading to an ambiguous ending that qualifies Mystic River for contemporary classic status. --Jeff Shannon

... answers and a few more secrets besides. As you’ve probably gathered, Mystic River is not a happy tale. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film is a dark and sombre tale about justice, retribution and fate. If you like happy endings, then it will come as no surprise to find that Mystic River is probably NOT the film for you. So what’s it all about? Well, the whole film has a distinctly Stephen King feel to it. Mr King has a definite thing for stories about how childhood events that have an impact on adult lives and that...more

Whilst three young friends are playing on the sidewalk one afternoon, they spot some newly laid cement and decide to carve their names into it. Just as the third boy (Dave) is adding his name to the trophy, a car pulls up alongside them and a man who appears to be a policeman steps out and calls over to them. Apparently angry at their vandalism of municipal property, he asks each of them where they live and when Dave advises that he lives on a different street, he tells the boy to get in the car so that they can all go and speak to his mother about what he has done. Initially reluctant to do so, the frightened boy eventually gives in, but as the car drives away and he ...

Premium Review Mystic River (DVD): Stellar stuff from Penn and Robbins (834 words)

Clint Eastwood has made some pretty good films, as a director ? from as far back as ?High Plains Drifter? in the 70s, and most especially ?The Unforgiven?. ?Mystic River? is the best film he?s made since ?The Bridges of Madison County?, and that was 8 years ago, so perhaps it?s about time. Bridges was a gentle kind of movie, and this one has next to nothing in common with it, but it?s definitely a return to form. ?Mystic River? is a quite dark, even unforgiving, tale. Clint Eastwood, good actor that he is, no longer appears in his own movies as a matter of course, and he isn?t in this one ...
