Neon Genesis Evangelion has been a big hit in the anime world and deservedly so. The 26 episode TV series made by Gainax may look like any other big robot show, but there's so much more depth to it. Watching it through to the highly debated end episodes will reveal this as the show transforms itself through out. At first things are relatively upbeat and not that distinct from other mecha shows, however things soon descend to a far darker level.
