Advantages: Large harddrive, black colour and HDMI connection
Disadvantages: Still not WiFi. Very noisy dual fan system.
I purchased the original Xbox 360 at launch because I was bored and off work with a broken foot for a while as the PS3 wasn't yet out. I did not have high hopes of it but immediately fell in love. After two rings of death I decided to upgrade to the Elite version in July 2009.
It is worth every penny. The 120GB hard drive is immense and a marked improvement over my old 20GB one which was full, you can also get a transfer kit free of charge from Microsoft via their website, this allows you to transfer everything from an old Xbox 360 harddrive to this new one allowing you to keep all your arcade games, themes, pictures and save game files. A lifesaver which is well worth doing if you're upgrading.
You can buy the harddrive seperately but it costs half as much as a brand new elite system so is not really worth it.
The black goes perfectly with almost all modern TVs and looks far better than the standard white system which always looked a bit out of place.
HDMi is a far superior connection to the old component cable which provides a better picture quality. It also upscales DVDs which the other cable never did.
Only one niggle the fan is VERY noisy so you have to have the volume up quite loud so it doesn't interfere with your game experience too much. Having said that if it stops the system overheating and solves the red ring of death problem it is a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
So in conclusion if you're after a new system it is well worth paying a bit more for the elite system, if you're upgrading only do so if your old one breaks or you run out of space on the harddrive, it would be hard to justify the cost otherwise.
Summary: Buying new? Yhen you can't beat it!! Worth an upgrade
