Microsoft Xbox 360
Advantages: More hardcore than the Wii
Disadvantages: Less hardcore than the PS3, fan noise
Fantastic mid-range console, but quiet will be better.
The Xbox 360 is well-positioned as a mid-range console that fits between the Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii, in terms of price (the PS3 is the dearest and the Wii has the edge over the Xbox), functionality (PS3 plays blu-ray and DVDs; Xbox simply DVDs; the Wii will not display video DVDs unless you modify the operating system), and graphics (I think you get the order by now!).
Having had extensive experience of the Xbox and the Wii, and more limited exposure to the PS3, please read elsewhere if you're choosing between a PS3 and an Xbox. Personally, the price premium on the PS3 was enough to put me off since there are plenty of great games on the Xbox, but if money's no object and it's games titles and playability which are key to you, other reviews may be more helpful.
Compared to the sheer fun of the Wii, the Xbox provides a more classic, higher-powered gaming experience. What it lacks through having a conventional controller as standard, it makes up for by its graphics capabilities, where people simply look like people rather than cartoonesque Miis.
The controller is now quite a classic. It boasts two thumb-controlled joysticks, arcade pads, and an array of triggers to keep your index fingers busy. It is quite large, which actually helps a lot with the ergonomics and it allows for hours of gameplay. As with all thumb-controlled controllers, be sure to take rests.
Quite simply, these are incomparably better than the Wii, but fall short of the PS3. Nonetheless, playing a game with HD output on a HD TV should be enough to satisfy most people!
This console has been around since 2006 and has amassed an array of excellent games to suit all styles. What was conspicuously lacking compared to the Wii were fitness / movement games. However, now that Project Natal has come to fruition in the form of Kinex, you can also enjoy games without the need of a controller of any sort, paving the way for fitness and dance games a-plenty.
Many games can be extended through online play. You need to subscribe to Xbox live take advantage of this service.
So, I'm tempted - anything to stop me buying one??
Well, yes. The fan on the Xbox is incredibly noisy. There is now a whisper-quiet slimline version of the Xbox which has recently been launched. If you can, play one at a friend's to gauge whether you would pay the price premium to reduce the noise and have the increased storage.
Summary: In terms of traditional gameplay per pound, it can't be beaten
