The original X Box
Member Name: BRoyJenkins
Advantages: Nice design, amazing exclusive games, graphics that still hold up today
Disadvantages: Heavy, can be unreliable
When I first received my X Box shortly after its release in 2001 I was unbelievably happy, this being my first ever real console. Using it over the years, I would remain just as pleased with it.
For one thing, the exclusive games for the X Box are top rate, more so than those for the PS2 in my opinion, and that's the real main reason for which to buy a console. Halo, Fable, Knights of the Old Republic, Splinter Cell (for a time, although the game did eventually become multi-platform), these are all classics. Elsewhere, the on-screen design and layout are equally impressive, although there isn't admittedly as much to do as on the 360, while the graphics for the X Box were miles ahead of any console of its time. Even now, some games for the console - I'll cite The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay as an example - hold up graphically.
However, with all the positives that come along with the console, there are some significant problems with it. Although I have since long rid myself of my original X Box, there were many issues I had with it personally. Firstly, as someone I once knew remarked, it is "the size of a park bench" as well as as heavy as one, so the PS2 always trumped the X Box in the console design department. Secondly, overheating with the X Box was always a problem for me. After a good few months of ownership, playing a game for only a short period of time would leave a scalding patch of heat where the console was laying, meaning it would be advisable to play it only in short bursts if you wanted it to stay useable. Thirdly, the controllers for the console are not wireless. This was never a problem at the time that I owned an X Box, but now 360s come with wireless controllers as standard, it would mean playing the X Box might feel like a major step back. Finally, a problem that may not apply to everyone but certainly applies to me: the X Box plug socket is a dangerous thing. Despite looking after the console like it was my child, within the first year the plug socket on the X Box wasn't reliable, causing the console to turn itself off sometimes. After a year, it would begin to shoot sparks out sometimes. After not much longer, plugging the lead into the X Box plug socket would fill my room with smoke and, by the end, it as almost impossible to turn my X Box on due to the unreliable plug socket. Not good.
Summary: Quality, if unreliable, console
